Breaking News ! Rishi Sunak confirmed that plans to change the curfew period for pubs and restaurants is "definitely" something the Government is looking at. The Chancellor said that the Government will review the 10pm curfew for pubs and restaurants – which was in place before national restrictions were reintroduced. He told the BBC’S Andrew Marr: “It’s definitely something that we’re looking at and I think, as I said, one of the things that we’ve been able to do as we’ve learned is get data, see what works and see where we can improve things. “I think it’s probably fair to say when we introduced the curfew, that was something that was in common with many other countries and cities around the world. “As we’ve learnt more, there’s opportunities for us to look and refine things, and that is one of the things on our list.” Video Loading Video Unavailable Click to play Tap to play The video will auto-play soon8Cancel Play now Boris Johnson will detail his “winter Covid plan” on Monday, setting out the restrictions to replace the national lockdown on December 2 and how people can spend the festive period. The Prime Minister is understood to be preparing to unveil a plan so that while last orders must be called at 10pm, people will get an extra hour to finish their food and drinks, with opening hours to be extended until 11pm. Downing Street said more areas are expected to enter higher tiers next month and those tiers will be strengthened to safeguard the gains made during the four-week lockdown. Mr Sunak said the localised tiered system is a “far better way” to tackle Covid-19 as he confirmed the Prime Minister’s plans, which were expected to be approved by the Cabinet on Sunday. He said: “I think frustrating as it is for all of us, Christmas is not going to be normal this year. “But that said, the Prime Minister and everyone else, we’re looking at ways to see how families can spend some time with each other over (the) Christmas period.

It comes after Calum Semple, professor of child health and outbreak medicine at Liverpool University said “fiddling” with drinking-up times or pubs’ closing times was not an effective mechanism. When asked if changing closing times would make a difference, he told Sophy Ridge on Sunday: “History has got a lot to teach us, in the years of prohibition they tried to change the hours, they tried to say you could only drink if you had a meal and everyone is very inventive and finds ways around it. “Fiddling at the edges of something like drinking-up times or pubs’ closing times is simply not an effective mechanism. “With pubs and clubs you have to look at the whole human behaviour and take human behaviour into account, and I think that’s what was missing when this first came in. “I think whatever iteration you see next will be better informed by understanding human behaviour and not driving us into unintended consequence that can increase transmission such as closing pubs early and everyone coming out into the streets at once.” He also said that despite industries such as pubs and hairdressers taking coronavirus precautions such as face masks or social distancing, they were still high-risk activities. He said: “According to the data, we can still identify these as very high-risk activities. “On an individual basis there will be people that have adhered strongly to using these mechanisms of protection and that will have protected them, but as in all things the underlying activity is risky and it doesn’t take much – you just touch your mask when you shouldn’t have and you pick up your scissors and adjust the hair, you wipe something out of somebody’s eye and all of a sudden you have broken the barriers. “It’s not just a case of just bang on a mask and a visor, it’s about not touching the face mask, it’s about washing your hands. “It’s difficult, it takes nurses and doctors years to learn to do this properly.”
