Breaking News ! Kevin Hollinrake was the most expensive MP in North Yorkshire last year, claiming more than £83,000 in expenses. Members of Parliament receive expenses to cover the costs of running an office, employing staff, having somewhere to live in London or their constituency, and travelling between parliament and their constituency. On top of his then salary of £79,468, the MP for Thirsk and Malton claimed £23,599.7 for travel, £23,478.01 for staffing, £20,347.57 for office costs and £16,087.07 for accommodation according to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA). Mr Hollinrake, who has been an MP for Thirsk and Malton since 2015, claimed the record of his expenses from May 2019 until March 2020 was "misleading". He said: "I have asked IPSA to amend its record of my expenses. The way £23,478 of this is allocated is misleading, it is actually staff costs which do not appear on this list of expenses claims. "Overall, my staff costs are within the budget allocated for staff by IPSA." He said he claimed £22,790 for accommodation and £16,896 for travel - which does not change the overall total of £83,512.35. He explained: "My travel and accommodation costs relate to London and I make no claim for travel within the constituency or any other local expenses. "A number of the other MPs in the list own their home in London so have lower accommodation costs." Mr Hollinrake has recently attracted some criticism from residents after it was revealed he claimed £25 for a Boots eye test in April 2018, which he said was for a staff member and is allowable according to IPSA guidelines. Mr Hollinrake claimed a whopping £65,947.8 more in expenses than Labour MP for York Central, Rachael Maskell. Name Constituency Party Expenses 19/20 Kevin Hollinrake Thirsk and Malton Conservative £83,512.35 Robert Goodwill Scarborough and Whitby Conservative £56,278.53 Nigel Adams Selby and Ainsty Conservative £43,724.81 Julian Sturdy York Outer Conservative £33,724.34 Andrew Jones Harrogate and Knaresborough Conservative £32,815.98 Julian Smith Skipton and Ripon Conservative £19,413.20 Rachael Maskell York Central Labour £17,564.55 Rishi Sunak Richmond Conservative £3,142 Ms Maskell, who is also the Shadow Minister for the Voluntary Sector and Charities, claimed a total of £17,564.55 in expenses. The majority was spent on office costs (£13,763.38) and the rest went towards travel. She said: "I am always aware that MPs expenses are paid for by the taxpayer, many are in low paid jobs and are struggling to get by. "I therefore ensure that my expenses are as low as possible through travelling the cheapest way and not claiming other expenses that I am entitled to. I therefore only really claim my train journey between York and London, and very occasionally other expenses." She added: "I think other MPs should reflect on their use of public funds and seek to remember who is funding them." The second most expensive MP in North Yorkshire was Robert Goodwill, who claimed £56,278.53.

. Nigel Adams, the MP for Selby and Ainsty, came third. He claimed £43,724.81 in expenses with almost half of it going towards accommodation.
