Breaking News ! A former Mayor of Kirklees, David Wright OBE, has died aged 84. If any man could be said to have devoted his life to public service it was David Wright who served on an eye-watering number of committees. Although he was born in York in his mature life he became 'Mr Deighton' and represented the area as a Kirklees councillor for many years. He met his wife-to-be Phyllis Agar at a cousin, John Colbert's 21st birthday party, and they were married at a Methodist church in York 1959. "At this meeting, I met a very tall young man, (he was 6ft 5ins tall), who asked me some tough questions but who soon became my greatest ally. "David was a man with many interests. He worked for the finance side of the NHS where he became the 'go-to' member of staff, fielding all the difficult challenges. "Public life beckoned and David became a Kirklees councillor for his home community of Deighton (in what is now Ashbrow ward) setting a new standard with his high level of activity and energy. "The year that David and Phyllis became Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees, (1992-93), was truly memorable and they broke all records in their number of engagements and the money they raised for charity. "David was never diverted from his other passions: the mental health charity he led, and the hospital and other charities that were so close to his heart.
