Breaking News ! Boss Garry Monk has thrown down the gauntlet to his Sheffield Wednesday players ahead of their crunch home double-header with Brentford and Luton Town. Buoyed after watching the Owls record a 1-0 win against his former club Birmingham City yesterday, Monk has challenged his squad to wipe out their 12-point deficit in the next week. Wednesday have accrued eight points from their opening five fixtures to move on to minus four but Monk has urged the team to continue grinding out results in their quest climb out of the Championship relegation zone. Monk told Yorkshire Live: "We know coming into this week there is that possibility of wiping out the 12-point deficit. "We know this could be a big week where we close that gap and put pressure on the teams above. "We have tried to set a standard but that doesn't mean we are going to achieve it. We know how hard it was against Birmingham. Brentford and Luton will be difficult but we have tried to set the standard high for ourselves this season to really put that mentality where it needs to be.

." Asked what the victory over the Blues will do for confidence moving forward, Monk said: "The confidence has been high anyway. We know we have been performing well enough to win games. It won't always go for us but if we can keep building what we are doing then hopefully we will get stronger and stronger."
