Breaking News ! Birmingham City head coach Aitor Karanka bemoaned his team's lacklustre first half performance after their home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday. Barry Bannan's 49th minute penalty sentenced the Blues to their first Championship defeat since Karanka took over the reins last summer. The Owls controlled proceedings for long periods as Birmingham struggled to create chances for three quarters of the contest. Jonathan Leko's introduction livened their attack up late on but Wednesday kept them at bay to cut their 12-point deficit down to minus four following a bright start to the campaign. Karanka, who was without key players Jon Toral and Lukas Jutkiewicz, said: "We had different players and we tried to be more offensive, but the lack of intensity - especially in the first half - made it difficult to attack and difficult to defend. "We need to start games how we did at the beginning of the season, because when we do that, we have the intensity and we created more chances in 10 minutes than we have in three or four games in a row. "We are almost the same as we were three or four weeks ago when we approached the games really well.

. "I don’t know if it will be about the players, about the warm-up, about the meetings but I need to check it because it is true in the last two games we didn’t approach the games in the way we have to approach it." Asked for his view on the penalty, Karanka said: "I don’t know. I don’t want to complain because it would be easy to go home thinking it hadn’t been a penalty or we should have scored one or two goals. "But I am not like that, I need to know what we have done bad, why we are making those mistakes and to sort it out as soon as possible because this league doesn’t stop and we have another challenge on Tuesday."
