Breaking News ! Wigan Warriors' latest Challenge Cup journey begins on Friday as they take on Championship part-timers York City Knights. It has been eight long years since the club last won the trophy, a drought they want to put an end to this year. We take a look at what to look out for in the cup clash. Respecting the opposition - and the cup Don't expect Wigan to ring the changes in this game. Their matchday squad will show respect to York, but perhaps more pressingly for Wigan, it will be a bold indication of their desire to win this trophy. The Warriors, the Challenge Cup's most successful club, haven't won the trophy since 2013, a period far too long for a club of Wigan's size. But it's not just the Challenge Cup that's alluded them. For most clubs, going two years without a major trophy would not be a cause for concern. But for Wigan Warriors, that's unacceptable. More so, it's a fact the current crop of players doesn't want to be attached to. This game is effectively a last 16 tie. As they prepare to enter the cup, they are just four wins away from itching that scratch.

. That's not to say York don't deserve the same level of respect, and Lam is determined to give it them. The City Knights finished third in 2019 and have strengthened on the field since, signing the likes of Ben Jones-Bishop, Ryan Atkins and Adam Cuthbertson. James Ford's side isn't one to be taken lightly. That is likely to be showcased when the teamsheet arrives before kick-off, even if some rotation is likely. For Lam, the game does provide him with an opportunity to give some players on the cusp of the team a chance to put their hand up. But he won't do so at the detriment of winning the game. Starting well The last thing the favourites want to be doing in a cup game is to be chasing the underdogs. Two weeks ago Leigh Centurions came out firing and stormed into an 18-0 lead, one Wigan ultimately did well to overturn. Last week, Wakefield Trinity dominated the opening quarter of the game as Wigan soaked up the pressure and spent a prolonged period in their own half before eventually conceding the first try of the game. The fact they have come from behind to win those games proves that they're more than capable of overcoming adversity, but as the season progresses, Wigan will want to, and most probably need to, start games better than they currently are doing. York will be well aware of Wigan's unspectacular openings and will want to exploit that, so you can fully expect them to come out all guns blazing. Simply put, they need to not only weather the storm but dictate the path of the storm themselves.
