Breaking News ! Actor Tony Maudsley has made his Coronation Street debut as undertaker George Shuttleworth, a potential love interest for florist Mary Taylor. Tony plays Archie Shuttleworth's son in the long-running soap after announcing he was joining his favourite show back in April. The 52-year-old actor wrote: "Yes I can indeed confirm this to be true. "I’m chuffed to be staying at my @itv home and heading to Weatherfield and I for one, couldn’t be happier." He added: "As a long time fan of @itvcorrie, I’m thrilled to be joining the cast of my favourite show. Here’s to the next exciting chapter." Tony as George in the Rovers Return (Image: ITV) Tony is best known to fans of the ITV comedy Benidorm for playin hairdresser Kenneth du Beke. He played Kenneth from 2011 until 2018 when the series was cancelled, and he was in Corrie before. The star from Merseyside previously played the character Bailey in 1995. In 1998 he played Stefan Kiszko in the film A Life for a Life, about the innocent man wrongfully jailed in 1975 for killing 11-year-old Rochdale youngester Lesley Molseed. Tony has starred in TV shows including Doc Martin, Miss Marple and Ordinary Lives and films including Sleepy Hollow and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, playing Grawp Hagrid's giant brother.
. In 2016 he played Edna Turnblad in the touring musical Hairspray. His character George's dad Archie was played by Roy Hudd, who died in March aged 83.
Roy, who was awarded an OBE in 2004 for services to entertainment, passed away peacefully after a short illness. Archie was an undertaker at Shuttleworth's Independent Funeral Directors on Tile Street.
