Breaking News ! One of the 'big four' has taken Aldi's crown as the cheapest supermarket for February 2021. Aldi has topped the charts for several months, but now there's a new winner - and it may surprise some shoppers. A study by LatestDeals.co.uk, which runs a supermarket price comparison service, found that ASDA is up to £33.89 cheaper than its rivals at £48.23 for a trolley full of staples. "Many households are feeling the pinch so getting great value on their food shopping is at the top of the agenda," says consumer expert Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk. "Prices can fluctuate, but those looking to save the pennies shouldn’t be afraid to be disloyal by shopping around and switching to the supermarket that’s currently offering the best deals." Using its Supermarket Price Comparison tool, available exclusively within the Latest Deals app, the cost of each home-brand item was then added together to produce the total basket price. The items chosen for the study were: milk, bananas, toilet paper, onions, carrots, baked beans, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, butter, bacon, basmati rice, fusilli pasta, mature cheddar, gold instant coffee, whole medium chicken, minced beef (20% fat), washing up liquid, and eggs. The selection of items is representative of some of the most commonly purchased items in a weekly supermarket shop.

.23. Waitrose was found to be the most expensive supermarket, with the cost of the items ringing in at more than 70% higher than ASDA at £82.12 Below are the costs of the supermarket basket based on 19 products, according to the analysis. ASDA – £48.23 Aldi – £48.94 Sainsbury's – £60.82 Iceland – £61.21 Morrisons – £62.71 Tesco – £62.92 Waitrose – £82.12 Tom said: "I was surprised that ASDA came out on top as being cheaper than Aldi. But the supermarket has done a lot of price cutting to compete recently and I am sure it will be rewarded by UK shoppers as a result. "You can see the results for yourself by searching for home-brand products such as onions, toilet paper, or whole medium chicken, on our free Supermarket Price Comparison tool, which is open to everyone." Commenting on why Lidl was not included in the study, he added: "We compare online prices as this data is available publicly. Lidl does not share its price information online, and so is not included."
