Breaking News ! Almost 17,000 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, according to the latest figures from the UK government. There have been a total of 16,982 lab-confirmed cases recorded in the UK in the last day, up from 16,171 ,reported on Saturday. This bring the total number of cases to 722,409. While the newest data shows a further 67 people have died with coronavirus across the UK - down from 150 reported in Saturday's figures. This takes the UK total of deaths in hospital settings to 43,646. Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 58,500 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate. A total of 632 patients with confirmed Covid-19 were admitted to hospitals in England on Friday, compared with 544 a week earlier. On recent Sundays, 35 fatalities were confirmed on October 11, 29 on October 4, 18 on September 27 and 12 on September 20.
. NHS England announced 61 deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities in hospitals in England to 30,971. The latest victims were aged between 54 and 96, and all except four, aged 56 to 92, had known underlying health conditions. The deaths were between October 4 and 17.
The North West recorded the highest number of deaths (24), followed by the Midlands (14), North East & Yorkshire (12), South East (five), London (four) and East (two). The South West region reported zero fatalities. Four other deaths were reported with no positive Covid-19 test result. Across the UK, England reported 61 new deaths, Northern Ireland had five, Wales recorded three and Scotland, none.
