Breaking News ! A woman was left devastated after her father-in-law's ashes were stolen during a burglary. She told a court of the upset the theft caused as the man responsible - Anthony Sheffield - appeared in the dock. The 51-year-old also stole three sets of golf clubs; two TVs; a laptop; a keyboard; perfume; and jewellery from the woman's Rochdale home. Manchester Crown Court heard the woman left her home, before locking the door five days before Christmas in 2018. She later received a worried call from a friend. The woman discovered someone had broken in through the French doors. A number of 'sentimental and expensive' items were taken - including her father-in-law's ashes. She spoke of the ordeal via videolink. Vincent Middleton, who burgled a house in Salford with Sheffield (Image: M.E.N.) "We have no idea what happened to our father-in-law’s ashes," the woman said. "Whether he will be returned to us or be laid to rest with his wife is very upsetting to my husband and our family.” Sheffield, who was being hunted by police after blood at the scene was DNA-matched, went on to commit another burglary, this time in Salford, with pal Vincent Middleton. The men were disturbed and left empty-handed. Sheffield, from Irlam, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary; and one count of attempted burglary. He was jailed for three years. Middleton, from Eccles, pleaded guilty to one count of burglary. He was given an 18-month community order. Earlier, prosecutor Bob Sastry told the court that on December 20, 2018, the Rochdale victim left her house at around 10am. She was later called by a friend telling her to go home. Vincent Middleton, who burgled a house in Salford with Sheffield (Image: M.E.N.) “It appeared to be that her home had been broken into,” Mr Sastry said. “A number of items were stolen and it appeared they had gone through the French doors. “The amount of damage and theft came to £10,000 - this included damage to the French doors, and interior bespoke door and the upstairs bathroom. “The items stolen included a set of golf clubs worth £1,000, another set of golf clubs and a set of ladies golf clubs, also worth £1,000. .” Blood was found on the stairs and hallway, which, after forensic analysis, was found to match the Sheffield's DNA profile. He was later circulated as wanted by cops. The victim told the court: "Apart from all that was taken in the burglary and the damage to the property, we still have no idea what happened to our father in law’s ashes. “Whether he will be returned to us or be laid to rest with his wife is upsetting to my husband and our family. Manchester Crown Court (Image: M.E.N.) “Some jewellery was given to me by my aunt and has sentimental value that cannot be replaced. “This has caused a great deal of unhappiness in my family. “My friend who disturbed the burglar has since died not knowing the burglar has been caught, which is especially sad. “All of the family has suffered and we continue to be penalised financially and emotionally. “I have not been able to leave the house for any length of time and my confidence has diminished.” The second burglary happened on June 23 this year. Middleton and Sheffield broke into a house in Eccles. They snatched a radio, but left it outside after being disturbed. In mitigation for Sheffield, Ronan Maguire said: “He deeply regrets the anguish this has obviously caused to this family. “There is a genuine expression of remorse. “He has had a lifelong struggle with alcohol and illegal drugs. “He doesn’t recall the events that led to the committing of the offence.” Mitigating for Middleton, Lucy Wright said her client was in a different position as he was not involved in the more serious of the two burglaries. Anthony Michael Sheffield (Image: GMP) “He is incredibly remorseful for his offending, not least for the inevitable distress caused to the home occupier, but also as this is his first time before the court since 2003,” Ms Wright said. “The root and crux of his offending was his hopeless addiction to drugs and alcohol. “He wishes to say he is two years free of heroin. “He is now going to put his addiction behind him, he has accepted the help offered to him, he has been loyal to his bail conditions and found stable accommodation.” Sentencing Sheffield, Recorder Mary Loram QC said: “The knowledge of what you were doing with those ashes is so disrespectful, and knowing they will never be returned and her father in law will never be laid to rest must be very difficult to live with. “It’s difficult to think of a more serious case of items of sentimentality you shouldn’t have taken. “I hope you are thoroughly ashamed of yourself.” Sheffield, of Falcon Drive, was sentenced to three years in prison. Middleton, of Bridgewater Street, was sentenced to an 18-month community order and ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activity requirements.
