Breaking News ! THE latest SEAT Leon, particularly in e-HYBRID guise, is easily a match for any mainstream family hatchback rivals. Buyers plumping for the Spanish marque’s car will enjoy a sophisticated plug-in powertrain, engaging driving dynamics and a hi-tech cockpit. That is all wrapped up in an appealingly sporty exterior and yet the pricing remains enticingly competitive. SEAT has a reputation for building cars that are fun to drive and the e-HYBRID set-up only serves to enhance that view. It consists of a 1.4-litre petrol engine, 85kW electric motor, 13.1kWh lithium-ion battery pack and six-speed automatic gearbox. This produces a muscular 204PS of power and 350Nm of torque, resulting in great acceleration throughout the range. Floor it and you can hit 62mph in just 7.5 seconds, while the top speed of 137mph means UK motorway cruising and overtaking is easily catered for. As responsive are the gear changes and well-weighted steering. Meanwhile, the placing of the battery pack below the rear seats and sporty suspension set-up of the tested FR model ensure the Leon’s ride always feels balanced yet connected to the road below. The powerplant is able to switch seamlessly between petrol, electric, or a mix of both, while the driver can choose to either hang on to the battery power or even boost it via the engine. Along with drive profiles for eco, normal, sport and individual settings that alter the car’s behaviour, the options mean you can always get the most out of the Leon depending on your mood or circumstances. I thoroughly enjoyed the pleasing, agile and relatively involving performance that was offered by this Leon hybrid over several days of mixed urban and rural driving. For the record, the FR version I was testing has an official average fuel economy of 217.3 to 235.4mpg, which means tailpipe emissions of just 27g/km. Read More Related Articles Ford Focus ST 2.

. The all-electric range is said to be as much as 40 miles – which is more than enough for most people’s daily needs. As impressive is the e-HYBRID’s Digital Cockpit, consisting of a 10.25in configurable driver binnacle and a 10in infotainment touchscreen that gives access to virtually all the car’s functions. This includes full smartphone integration (including use of the latest USB Type C ports), with an app to provide information or manage certain functions remotely such as charging and heating. There’s also a smart sat nav system – which you can view in the instrument panel – voice control, wireless device charger, emergency/breakdown call function and three-zone climate control. Other driver aids include keyless start, auto LED lights (including high beam) and wipers, cruise control with speed limiter and a forward collision warning/emergency braking set-up. Then there are front and rear parking sensors with graphics to aid you, a lane keeping system, driver drowsiness alert and an electronic parking brake with auto hold function. The SEAT Leon e-HYBRID FR 204PS DSG (Image: Giles Blair) The snazzy sports-style cloth seats are both comfortable and very supportive and I loved the feel of the perforated-leather, flat-bottomed steering wheel. There is good room for four adults or a family of five and the 270-litre boot is sensibly shaped to take a couple of cases. Fold the 60/40 split rear bench and there are 1191 litres to play with. Chrome interior detailing and some strategically placed soft-touch finishing add to a feeling that this is a well-built, upmarket machine. The low-slung Leon FR exterior has plenty of kerbside appeal, with a great blend of dynamic edges and flowing curves, as well as pronounced lower front and upper rear spoilers. Angular light clusters front and back, dark-tinted rear windows, a shark’s fin antenna, 17in alloys and dual exhaust pipes all add to a look of sporting prowess. Finally, an on-the-road price of £30,970 should ensure the Leon e-HYBRID FR gains plenty of interest in SEAT dealers’ showrooms, too.
