Breaking News ! Would-be commuters working from home and holidays grounding to a halt during the Covid-19 lockdown has led to a sales slump for Trainline. Clare Gilmartin, chief executive of the FTSE 250 firm, which sells coach and train tickets online on behalf of operators and takes a commission, said there was “significant disruption” to the transport industry from the pandemic. Passenger numbers industry-wide have been hammered since March by travel restrictions during lockdown, as people were urged to work from home where possible. Trains into London still remain much quieter than prior to the outbreak, with scores of firms allowing staff to continue doing their jobs remotely. Trainline said ticket sales fell to £358 million in the six months to August 31, 81% lower than a year earlier. The figure in the UK was £241 million.

. That improved here in the second quarter, as lockdowns eased first overseas and then in the UK. Trainline said demand for business travel still remained subdued during the period, but Gilmartin pointed to some encouraging signs. Gilmartin said: “I’m pleased to now see the industry recovering, particularly in our international markets, as well as a faster shift to online reservation and digital ticketing, as anticipated, given the increased need for touchless travel.” Numis analyst Gareth Davies said Trainline should be “a significant beneficiary of an accelerated move to digital tickets”. Trainline added it outperformed cost saving targets for the first half and continues to have sufficient liquidity to operate for the foreseeable future.
