Breaking News ! "There was a moment in the first round when Tommy McCarthy was finally backing up what he, and many others, had always talked about – his natural ability. Romanian Alexandru Jur was never going to be a threat to McCarthy in the Manchester Arena. Not just because he was a level below the European cruiserweight champion, but also that McCarthy is now boxing like a man for whom the shackles of ‘what if’ have been cast away.Leading up to Saturday night’s impressive sixth round stoppage of Jur, McCarthy’s coach Pete Taylor pondered how the 30-year-old had developed since they teamed up two years ago and commented: “Tommy was always concerned about his fitness, but that’s not the case now.”He could also have added, as McCarthy had insisted during the build-up, that he was now bringing more intensity to training and being more ‘nasty’ in the ring. While Commonwealth champion Chris Billam Smith will offer a more intriguing challenge in July, McCarthy is now a fighter with momentum and genuine belief that he can mix it with the best. Any self-doubts over his engine have gone and a new commitment to impose himself on opponents rather than overly concern himself with the consequences of what might come his way in return would seem to have been banished. A dam of inhibition has been burst and McCarthy is allowing himself to flow in the ring.Challenger Jur was the inhibited one as McCarthy snapped out his jab and found the target to body and head with some ease. While one note of criticism would be too many right hands falling short, the European champion seared Jur with body shots in rounds four and six. Up at the count of seven in the fourth, Jur was down again from another left and counted out at 2:09 of the sixth round.“I’m now one fight away from a world title shot. The fight with Chris Billam Smith is a world title eliminator in all but name. My European title and his Commonwealth title will be on the line and the British belt could be on the line as well.
.“Boxing is a crazy business. When I think back to March 2019 my career was in tatters after losing to Richard Riakporhe and now I’m so close to world title shot. My last three fights have been title fights and the confidence I have is through the roof.“I was very happy with the performance. I thought Jur would have tried to put me under more pressure but then again, I think I surprised him with how I came out of the blocks and pressed the action. When I caught him with the body shot in the fourth I was surprised that he got up because he was in agony.”McCarthy was quick to once more praised the impact coach Pete Taylor has had on his career. “Pete has helped give me the all-round confidence, he’s the best coach in the world. I’m just getting better and better with every camp we work together,” added McCarthy.“It’s amazing to think that my career is going so well when we’re in the middle of a pandemic. There’s going to be a lot of hype around the fight with Billam Smith. It’s just a pity it couldn’t be in Belfast because the crowd would be amazing for that one."
