Breaking News ! Cambridge is one of the UK's biggest hotspots for people being fined for illegally using the bus lane. Over 2018/19 financial year, bus lane cameras have handed out 74,224 penalty charge notices or PCNs to drivers. It's brought in £1.8 million in fines to the council, with tickets costing £60 or £30 if paid early. Not all tickets dished out will have been paid of course. However, despite handing out the most tickets it is only ranked 10th for the amount of money it had been gained from the fines. Two are located on Newmarket Road, one covers the road heading out of town between River Lane and Barnwell Bridge, and the other heading into town between Barnwell Bridge and River Lane. The other two are located on Elizabeth Way and on Hills Road heading into town. The ones on Newmarket Road and Elizabeth Way are enforced 24 hours of the day while Hills Road is only between 7am and 7pm.
A county council spokeswoman said: “We are committed to supporting public transport across the county. Bus lanes are enforced to give priority to help buses and to provide users with quick transport access. By encouraging people to use public transport, it will reduce congestion and improve air quality for everyone. “We would like to remind drivers to observe all road signs while traveling and take note of the restrictions.”
