Breaking News ! A SERIAL offender who stole a works van before being caught after a high-speed police chase has been jailed for 22 months. Thomas Bannan, 39, crashed into a fence and three parked vehicles in Airdrie. The dad-of-four, who appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court from prison via videolink, admitted stealing a Ford Transit van in Motherwell on July 4, driving dangerously while disqualified and threatening or abusive behaviour. Mairi-Clare McMillan, prosecuting, said the driver had left his works van unlocked for no more than five minutes and when he returned at 5.30pm it was gone. Police spotted the van later that evening in Plains, but Bannan sped off when he saw their blue light flashing. During the pursuit, he veered onto the wrong side of the road, forcing other drivers to swerve to avoid a crash. Ms McMillan added: “Bannan continued on to Airdriehill Street, Airdrie. There he drove on to a footpath to avoid a second police car and crashed into a wooden fence.

. “It became immobilised due to significant damage and Bannan ran off. He was arrested after a short chase.” Bannan yelled abuse and threats as he was being arrested. This was his sixth conviction for driving while disqualified and defence agent Nicky Matteo admitted: “His driving record is unenviable. “He has had cocaine and opium habits, and was given an 18-month drug treatment and testing order (DTTO) last year in an effort to break his cycle of offending.” Mr Matteo said his client had “embraced” the DTTO, but the service was hit by the Covid-19 outbreak and he had struggled after the sudden death of his sister. As well as being jailed, Bannan was banned from driving for four years.
