Breaking News ! The Scottish Government will launch a nationwide campaign in the new year aimed at encouraging as many people as possible to get vaccinated against Covid-19. Health secretary Jeane Freeman said today the vaccine would not be made be made compulsory for Scots but added ministers would actively work to reassure the public the simple procedure was entirely safe. There has been concern among health chiefs around the world over the impact of online disinformation which makes false claims over vaccinations. A recent opinion poll found almost two-thirds of people in Britain say they would get vaccinated for coronavirus but young people are far more likely to refuse a jab than older people. The Scottish Government hopes one million Scots could be vaccinated by January in a national fight-back against deadly coronavirus. Frontline NHS and care home workers will be first in line if potentially life-saving breakthrough drugs are given the green light as hoped. Freeman said ministers had "no plans" to make any of the vaccines compulsory for Scots. "What we have to do is hear why people may be reluctant to take the vaccine," she told the BBC. "In Scotland we have a very good record of high uptake of vaccines and we have strong track record of delivering them safely and effectively. "We'll be looking to give the public maximum information about all the processes this vaccine has gone through - which are exactly the same robust and rigorous processes as any vaccine - to ensure that it is safe.

. In the early part of the new year we intend to deliver very clear information to every household in Scotland which explains why the vaccine is safe and the processes it has gone through. "It will explain how we are going to vaccinate people and what to expect when you are invited along to be vaccinated." Under the Scottish Government's plan the first wave of vaccine distribution, from December to February, will go to frontline health and social care staff, older residents in care homes, care home staff, the over-80s, unpaid carers and the people who are carrying out the vaccination programme. Everyone in that category will be contacted in December and January. After the priority groups, attention will turn to over-65s and people under 65 at additional clinical risk. Then the general population will be vaccinated, Freeman told parliament. That's around 4.4million people over the age of 18. Around 2000 people and support staff will be needed to make the scheme possible by the end of January, by which time a million Scots are expected to be vaccinated.
