Breaking News ! The UK's first ever Dutch-style roundabout - where cyclists and pedestrians have right of way - opened in Cambridge yesterday (July 31). The Fendon Road roundabout was officially opened, only slightly later than planned due to the pandemic, at 11am on Friday with a socially distanced ribbon cutting. The total cost of the roundabout had also gone slightly over budget ballooning to an estimated £2.4 million. Since its conceptual stages the roundabout has divided readers, with some calling it a "waste of money". Others welcomed the new roundabout hailing it an "excellent idea". Now it has opened, reactions have been a mixed bag once again. Here's what CambridgeshireLive readers had to say about the latest addition to Cambridge's roads. "Waste of money" One reader wrote of the cost: "What an absolute waste of money. Could have done some good with that amount of money. All we have to show for it is an outdated roundabout. Still as long as the big wigs at the council are happy." A major selling point of the roundabout is that it gives cyclists and pedestrians right of way over cars - or at least it does in theory as a number of our readers have pointed out. There are priority crossings for those on bikes and on foot but cars do need to actually stop for them first.

. Some cyclists tried out the roundabout Many said that with all the best intentions, many drivers would probably ignore the rules on the roundabout, either because they would be unaware of them or just wouldn't care. Indeed, one driver said online: "So can someone please explain where I would stand as a car driver who nearly swiped a cyclist who used the zebra crossing at speed to cut in front of me from left to right? Fortunately I was going really slow as I'm a bit apprehensive about it. But still." Another reader wrote that while they work well in Holland, where they are common, people would not know in the UK. He said: "Excellent idea, I saw a lot of them in Holland where they work really well as long as everyone follows the rules. "Unfortunately in the UK the car thinks it is king and many drivers won't be able (or want) to adapt to a new way of doing things that benefits everyone instead of the present system with is weighted towards motor traffic." However, not everyone was convinced that the roundabout was going to be an abject failure, saying that anyone who had passed their driving test would understand the road markings and would know what to do. None of the road markings used here are new to anyone - we all passed our driving test, right? "Motorists will just need to slow down and be aware of their surroundings and read the road, with a little extra caution at first, as with any new road layout." A CGI rendering of the roundabout Of course almost everyone talking about the roundabout was doing so from the perspective of a driver, and not as a pedestrian or cyclist, for whom ultimately the roundabout is designed for. Time will of course tell, but encouraging people to leave their cars at home can only be a good thing for Cambridge. Tell us your opinions of the new roundabout below or get in touch via email.
