Breaking News ! At least two pupils at schools in the greater East Kilbride region have tested positive for coronavirus. However, the News understands the number is higher, with one source telling us of a primary pupil at a school in the town testing positive. That has raised concerns about the speed at which COVID-19 is spreading through schools across the area. The latest cases come at St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High and Strathaven Academy. Letters circulated to parents from the NHS confirmed the cases. A pupil has tested positive for COVID at St Andrew's and St Bride's (Image: East Kilbride News) Dr S Josephine Pravinkumar, consultant in public health medicine, told parents in Strathaven that a pupil had tested positive and was “self-isolating at home”. Her letter was mirrored by her colleague in public health, Ashley Goodfellow, who told St Andrew’s and St Bride’s parents a pupil there had tested positive and was also at home.
. “Public health advice is being given to these individuals and they have been told to self-isolate. We are aware there will be concern for children, their parents/carers and staff at this time. “However, I want to reassure you that a full risk assessment has been carried out ensuring all the recommended infection prevention and control measures are in place and there is a thorough cleaning programme for the school building.”
The letters also offered guidance because of the increased infection rates in Lanarkshire, advising that “mixing socially in the community without maintaining physical distancing measures helps the virus to spread widely”. The public health consultants asked people to “follow physical distancing guidance,” encouraging pupils and staff to “wash their hands thoroughly and regularly using soap and water for 20 seconds”.
