Breaking News ! Blantyre-raised MSP Monica Lennon says she is committed to representing her local area after putting her name forward to be the new leader of the Scottish Labour party. The decision came after Richard Leonard unexpectedly announced he will be stepping down. The leadership election opened on Monday, January 18, with Anas Sarwar the only other elected politician running for the post. The new leader will be announced on February 27. Ms Lennon will run for the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse constituency in this year’s Holyrood election as well as being on the Central Scotland list. Her recent success in leading the campaign for the Period Poverty Bill has boosted the MSP’s confidence in chairing her party, where she hopes to bring positive change in challenging times. Ms Lennon explained her decision to stand was the “right thing to do”. She told the Advertiser: “Over the weekend I spent a lot of time listening to party members, a lot of people were getting in touch encouraging me to run. “It was a big decision, it wasn’t something I was planning to do, however I think it is the right thing to do. “I think I’ve shown in my short time in parliament that I’m focused on getting things done and getting results for people, making people’s lives and communities better – my legislation on period poverty demonstrates that. “To be a real effective force in Scottish politics again, Scottish Labour needs to be fresh in our outlook and I believe I’m a new generation of leader to get out there and connect with working class people – people who feel let down by the system, let down by governments at Westminster and at Holyrood, and to bring some fresh energy.” Turning to the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse constituency, the MSP said: “It’s the constituency where I live, went to school and I am raising my family, so I’m absolutely committed to represent my local area. “At a local level what I’d be focused on during the pandemic is making sure that we keep people as safe as possible. “I’m Scottish Labour’s health and social care spokesperson so I’ve been up close listening to frontline workers but also people and families, and in particular the devastation that we’ve seen in our care homes, and that’s why I’m really passionate about standing in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse.” Ms Lennon stressed she wants to help the elderly in communities who have been “let down” during the pandemic and help protect their dignity and safety particularly in care homes. The MSP added: “We need to look at what was happening in our country before the pandemic. “We know locally that in Larkhall and Blantyre the SNP council closed council-run care homes.

. “I care about our local area. I was raised in Blantyre, I’ve gone to local schools here, I’ve lived in this area all my life and I know the issues that matter to people. “It’s about people worried about having enough money at the end of the week to get on in life, for them and their families. “The pandemic has made everything a million times worse, we don’t just have a public health crisis but an economic crisis and through my work as an MSP, I’ve been helping local businesses who are being passed from pillar to post between South Lanarkshire Council and the Scottish Government. “Local taxi firms, restaurants, you name it, self-employed people who have fallen through the cracks and are getting no support. “I’ve come into politics to get stuff done, to show people that actually we don’t have to just settle for this, life can be better and we can do that by pursuing radical economic and social change and I want to work with people in the constituency, right across Lanarkshire and, indeed, Scotland.” Ms Lennon reflected on the journey leading to potentially succeeding Richard Leonard, which has involved cross-party working to represent local people. “I did question whether this was the right time but I’ve got the courage and the determination to win results for people”, she added. “That’s what I’ve been doing in parliament. The Period Poverty Bill is the best known example of that, it’s something that’s given people involved in the campaign a real boost.” Ms Lennon also told of how she secured an emergency wage fund for social care workers who were put on Statutory Sick Pay when self-isolating, adding: “The Tories and SNP voted that down and I went in and I used every argument I could think of and I swallowed my pride on it, worked with the SNP health secretary Jeane Freeman to say ‘Let’s get this fixed’, so I’m not afraid to work with other people and work outside the Labour party to do that.” The politician said growing up in Blantyre shaped her politics and put her on the side of working people; her recent successes even brought accolades from her former modern studies teacher who got in touch. She said: “I recently got a bit of a confidence boost when my modern studies teacher in St John Ogilvie High School found me on Twitter and said she was so proud of everything I’d achieved and said ‘you were a superstar in my class and you’re a superstar now’ and I think no matter how old you are, you still want to get that. “I left high school at 16 and was the first in my family to go to university and it was a young age to be there and that meant a lot to me. I had opportunities that my family didn’t have before me and I don’t take that for granted. “We need politicians that are going to put the people first and that’s what I’m about. I’m standing in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse to put our community first. “You’ll find when you look at the Scottish Labour policy agenda and the ideas I’m bringing forward a lot that you’ll agree with and I want people to feel they can reach out and find a friend in me and the Scottish Labour Party.”
