Breaking News ! "The sister of Lyra McKee has pleaded for violence on the streets of Belfast to stop before someone else is killed and another family is left traumatised forever. Nichola McKee Corner said she was horrified at the sight of adults applauding young people with petrol bombs as they attacked police and set fire to a bus as trouble flared on Wednesday.It mirrored the response to the appearance of the gunman in Creggan who fired the fatal shots that left her sister dying on the street two years ago.Journalist Lyra was observing a riot on April 18, 2019 that had erupted after police carried out house searches in the area. A gunman fired shots towards police, but hit Ms McKee instead.Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, Nichola said if young people continue being manipulated into violence it is almost inevitable someone will get killed.She said: "I was horrified and terrified watching the violent scenes in west Belfast and my greatest fear was that someone was going to be killed."I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw grown men and women applauding the young people charging up the road with petrol bombs in their hands on their way to set fire to that bus."It just reminded me of the night when Lyra died and how the people there applauded the gunman firing shots that killed my sister."I am shocked that no one seems to have learned anything from that terrible time. This has affected me so deeply - I couldn't close my eyes last night because I was convinced someone was going to get killed."Nichola said it is "so disheartening" to see what is happening. She had strong words for the First Minister and suggested that rather than blaming others for the violence, Arlene Foster should reflect on the content of the speech she made in Creggan the day after Lyra died.Mrs Foster was applauded as she attended a vigil in the wake of the shooting in 2019 as she urged Catholics and Protestants to come together.Amid the disorder, Mrs Foster tweeted that the scenes of violence were "vandalism and attempted murder", adding: "These actions do not represent unionism or loyalism.

."Nichola added: "I am disgusted at the lack of political leadership being shown and it is so discouraging to see the lack of leadership."Arlene Foster is not being very helpful in the words she is using and it was irresponsible, I think, of her to tweet that the real criminals in all of this is Sinn Fein."Police officers were being attacked and for what? Police did put forward cases recommending prosecutions (for breaking coronavirus laws governing attendance at funerals) but it was the Public Prosecution Service that made the decision not to."It is not even two years ago that Arlene Foster stood in Creggan and said it doesn't matter if you are Catholic or Protestant, if you identify as Irish or British, your pain is my pain."Well, I am asking her now to remember those words and stay true to them. The whole of Northern Ireland is hurting right now. We are all fearful and we all want this violence to stop."Ms McKee Corner said she would not advise any young person to stay here.She said: "I do despair for the future of Northern Ireland and I have told my children that, as soon as they can, they should find a way out of this place, they should go because I think we are all going to be held prisoners to the past."Nothing will change until we have a new breed of politician who can say: 'What is the issue here, let's talk about it and see what we can do about it like rational human beings'."The politicians are fanning the flames and it is just not the way we want to live. No one wants to go back to tit-for-tat killings and waking up every morning to the news that someone else has died."Last night reminded me of how close we are to going back to that which is why I am pleading with everything that is in me for the violence to stop and for the politicians to remember what they said almost two years ago."They may have forgotten their words, but we have not."" , "isAccessibleForFree": "False", "hasPart": { "@type": "WebPageElement", "isAccessibleForFree": "False","cssSelector": "#flip-pay"} }
