He was later put into an induced coma that lasted 13 weeks - which he woke up from in July. Kate has been open with fans that Derek's recovery will be a slow process as the virus "attacked everything", leaving him with clots in his lungs, holes in his heart and made him diabetic, and doctors have warned Kate that Derek might never fully recover from the damage done to his body.

At Easter, Kate spoke about how difficult it was to go through her second Easter without husband Derek. "Happy Easter everyone," she started off the heartfelt post. "It's so hard that it’s the second we've lived through in Lockdown/restrictions and of course, our second without Derek home with us. "But he is still here so we have so much to give thanks for and there are lots to hope for isn't there."
Kate's recently made an ITV documentary, named Finding Derek, in which focused on her husband's battle with coronavirus. She is also releasing a book on April 29 called The Power Of Hope: The moving memoir from TV’s Kate Garraway. The memoir is her personal diary from the tough period of her life and she hopes her honest words will be helpful to other families who are facing the struggles she and her family have in the last year.
