Breaking News ! Cambridgeshire police have issued an important update after a school was ravaged by fire last night (July 31). Duxford CofE Community Primary School was torn apart by fierce flames which destroyed the roof and a preschool classroom. Teachers watched on in tears as their school was engulfed by flames - which took 50 firefighters around nine hours to extinguish. Residents first noticed smoke above the school in St John's Street that evening, but apparently in just a matter of minutes the roof had been engulfed by flames. Now police are asking concerned residents to avoid the area while investigations into the cause of the fire take place, as the site may be dangerous. "Whilst the fire has now been extinguished, further work will need to be done to make the building safe. "Although we understand it might be tempting to want to go and investigate what’s happened, we would urge residents to avoid the area and ask parents and carers to discourage children from going onsite for their own safety." "Around 50 firefighters, including crews from Cambridge, Gamlingay, Huntingdon and Ramsey, along with crews from Saffron Walden in Essex, Newmarket in Suffolk, plus Royston and Baldock in Hertfordshire attended the incident. "Firefighters arrived to find a well-developed fire in a single storey building used as a primary school. "Wearing breathing apparatus they extinguished the fire using hose reels and jets and checked the area for hot spots using thermal imaging cameras. "Crews were present throughout the night to ensure the fire was out and the scene was safe. The last crew left the scene by around 5.30am.
