Breaking News ! On Monday, April 5, the Prime Minister announced that everyone in England will be able to access twice-weekly Covid tests from tomorrow, April 9. It means that every resident in Peterborough will now be able to test themselves using a rapid flow test twice a week for COVID-19, which could be key in helping the city get its infection rates under control. Currently, Peterborough's rolling case rate for the seven days to April 2 stands at 73.7, well above the UK average. A closer look reveals that while some areas, such as Walton, Werrington, Longthorpe and Netherton have fewer than three cases, other neighbourhoods are reporting much higher figures. Currently, Dogsthorpe has the highest rolling rate, sitting at 243.1, with 23 cases in total, though that has fallen by almost 18 per cent. Peterborough Central has managed to lower its rolling rate, now sitting well below the England case rate average, at 24.1, with just three cases in the area. While some areas of Peterborough seem to have low case rates, others are still well above the country's average - so increased availability of rapid flow testing for everyone, symptomatic or not, could help lower the case rate by curbing transmission. Speaking in a press conference on Monday, Mr Johnson urged the nation: "Please use the free NHS tests – even if you don’t feel ill, because remember 1 in 3 people with this virus doesn’t have any symptoms." As we move along our roadmap out of lockdown and toward a return to some sense of normality, the rollout of not only vaccines but rapid testing will prove to be important measures. After weeks of debate and rumours, Mr Johnson announced the Government's plans for a Covid status certification - a Covid passport as many have been calling it. He hinted that the new certification, which would show proof of vaccination, a recent negative test or presence of antibodies, would prove vital to the return of large-scale events at fuller capacity, international travel and potential to ease social distancing measures. Dr Liz Robin, heath director for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (Image: Fenland District Council) By implementing twice-weekly rapid testing, those who are asymptomatic could be identified before they go on to spread the virus, and help clamp down on the spread of infection as things begin to reopen and people begin to mix and socialise more.

. "Alongside the ongoing vaccine rollout, it will help us move forward with the roadmap out of lockdown. "What's most important is that as many people as possible take up the offer of twice-weekly rapid testing, whichever option they use. "This is especially important for anybody who is going back to work next week following the easing of lockdown restrictions and will be coming into contact with members of the public." These are: Community testing Workplace testing NHS Test & Trace sites Pharmacy collect Education LFD Direct Community testing would involve taking a test at a rapid testing site locally, of which there are eight in Cambridgeshire and two in Peterborough. The Peterborough sites, at St Mark's Church on Lincoln Road and from April 12 St Andrew's Church on Ledbury Road in Netherton, have been set up to identify asymptomatic cases. Both testing sites are open Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm. Workplaces across Peterborough have also signed up to offer testing in the workplace. This includes running their own testing sites, where you can take a supervised test, and workplace collect, so you can collect a box of tests to use at home. NHS Test & Trace sites across the country are already operating as symptomatic testing sites in the morning, however, they are currently also providing an afternoon collection option for you to pick up a box of rapid tests. There are three in Peterborough, Gladstone Park Community Centre, the Lions Rugby Club and the East of England Showground. These sites are open for test collection from 2.30pm until 8pm every day of the week.
