Breaking News ! The First Minister has announced that lockdown restrictions should be “significantly eased” by late April with a phased reopening of the economy. Non-essential shops, gyms, hospitality and hairdressers could all reopen with social distancing measures in place if coronavirus transmission continues to fall, Nicola Sturgeon said today. Older pupils will be able to return to school from March 15, but this will be confirmed early next month. Ms Sturgeon said this could include the rest of the primary school years, four to seven, and getting more senior phase secondary pupils back in the classroom for at least part of their learning. Ms Sturgeon said that she also hopes to restart outdoors non-contact group sports for 12-17-year-olds in this phase. The aim is also to increase the limit on outdoor mixing between households to four people from a maximum of two households - compared to two people from two households just now. The current stay at home requirement could be lifted by April 5 with the final phase of school return possibly taking place on this date as well. It is hoped the essential retailers list will be expanded slightly and click-and-collect to resume for non-essential retail. Places of worship could also open on a restricted numbers basis.

. She said if all goes according to plan – Scotland will move fully back to a levels system from the last week in April. At that stage, she hopes that all parts of the country currently in level 4 - will be able to move to level 3 - possibly with some revision to the content of the levels. The First Minister told the chamber the watchwords at this stage continue to be “caution and patience”. She warned against “taking the brakes of too quickly”, which would allow the virus to get ahead again and put progress out of lockdown into reverse. “There is little doubt that we now have much, much firmer grounds for optimism that vaccination, and the other tools at our disposal offer us a route back to greater normality,” she said. Ms Sturgeon said that the strategic framework is “deliberately cautious” at this stage. But she added: “In the coming weeks, if the data allows and positive trends continue, we will seek to accelerate the easing of restrictions.” But the Tories’ Ruth Davidson said people have simply been told to “tune in again in three weeks” after the First Minister said more details would be set out in mid-March. “This isn’t a route map out of COVID it is a holding document for the next eight weeks,” she said.
