Breaking News ! Never mind walking 500 miles – a 72-year-old from East Kilbride completed 2020 miles last year. That’s the equivalent of more than 77 marathons for gran-of-one Maureen Westland from Stewartfield. And she has got a track record for motoring up the miles. In 2018 she walked over 1200 miles and in 2019 it was 1415. But in November the retired driving examiner realised she could fittingly reach 2020 miles and went all out to get there. Maureen took up walking after retirement and told the News she thoroughly recommends it to help boost your spirits and keep fit. “I had quite a sedentary job for 20 years being a driving examiner and instructor so when I retired I wanted to be active, and that’s when I started walking more,” Maureen said. “At the beginning of the year I didn’t think I would walk that distance but I got an app which people use to see how many miles they have ran and towards the end of the year I thought I can reach 2020 if I really put the effort in - and I did. “I was quite chuffed with myself for doing it and I’ll keep up the walking but maybe not do quite as much this year.” Read More Related Articles Strathaven gym owner stresses importance of exercise during lockdown While Maureen loves walking it’s not without its challenges.

. “And when the weather was good I upped that to eight or nine so I had plenty in the bank if the weather turned bad – which it did. “It’s really hard to do it when it gets as bad as it has of late as the pavements are just too icy and slippy.” Get the latest Lanarkshire news straight to your inbox! Maureen added: “I would say walking is something most folk can do – you don’t have to jog or run – and it’s just as good for you. “And you don’t have to do as many miles as I have done but it’s amazing how a few miles leads to a few others. “I just have my routes in and around East Kilbride and sometimes I will listen to music. “And it has certainly made the last year more bearable, I just couldn’t have imagined being stuck in the house all the time. I would say to anyone just try it.”
