Breaking News ! A convicted paedophile serving his sentence in Cambridgeshire became the first UK prisoner to die from Covid-19 in March last year. Former school caretaker Edwin Hillier, who died on March 22 2020, was serving an eight and a half year sentence for abusing girls in the 1970s. Hillier had subjected his victims to "repeated and systematic abuse" for his own "sexual gratification," the Mirror reports. The 84-year-old, who had received a suspended jail sentence for a sexual offence against a girl in the 1970s, told one of his victims: "Nobody believes a 10-year-old when she speaks." Prosecutor Beverly Cripps told St Albans Crown Court in February 2016 that the offences were first reported to the police in 2002 by the boyfriend of one of the victims. Hillier, of Saturn Way, Hemel Hempstead, pleaded guilty to attempted rape and indecent assault on one victim who was aged between 10 and 15. He also admitted two charges of a serious sexual offence (buggery), attempted rape and indecent assault on a girl when she was aged between 7 and 14. An inquest was held at Peterborough Town Hall today (January 14) following Hillier's death in March last year. Coroner Mr Simon Milburn told the inquest Hillier was serving his sentence at HMP Littlehey, near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire a Category C male sex offenders prison that holds up to 480 inmates. He also developed diabetes while at HMP Littlehey. In February 2020, around a month before his death, his health had deteriorated due to his pre-existing health conditions and stents were inserted into his heart vessel. It’s believed Hillier contracted Covid-19 shortly afterwards, and he first reported feeling short of breath on March 11. He was not initially exhibiting either of the two main symptoms of Covid-19: a high temperature or a new and continuous cough. However, his symptoms worsened over the following few days and he was admitted to Hinchingbrooke Hospital on March 19, reporting ‘feeling generally unwell, shortness of breath and fever.

. He was swabbed for coronavirus during his stay at Hinchingbrooke, but the results, which came back positive, did not arrive until after his death. Out of these deaths, 12 were from natural causes and one was self-inflicted. There have been four deaths from natural causes at HMP Littlehey since Hillier’s death, two of which were from Covid-19. According to a Prison and Probation Ombudsman report prepared after Hillier's death, the care he received was of a "reasonable standard and equivalent to that which you would expect to receive in the community." However, the report also said "opportunities to identify Covid-19 were missed." As he had not left HMP Littlehey since mid-February, it was concluded that Hillier must have contracted Covid-19 while in the prison. Healthcare staff at the prison reportedly "did not monitor Hillier as directed" until his conditions worsened and they received a "code blue call". The report said the prison should ensure that staff are able to recognise Covid-19 symptoms and that prisoners should be monitored in accordance with clinical instructions. Find the latest crime news in your area: However, delivering his verdict, coroner Simon Milburn said: "Although the Prison and Probation Ombudsman refers to opportunities to identify Covid-19 being missed within the prison, I make it clear that on the face of the papers I see that absolutely no indication that those missed opportunities, had they been acted upon, would’ve led to any different outcome of this case. "Mr Hillier was a man with a number of co-morbidities and sadly increasingly poor health." The cause of death was suggested by a doctor as '1A Covid-19 with underlying causes and 2 chronic kidney disease, severe heart failure and frailty,' which the coroner was 'more than happy to accept as the medical cause of death.' "It’s clear on any view that Covid-19 is a naturally occurring disease," the coroner said. "That was the immediate primary cause of death. Therefore, in this case, I have no hesitation in recording that Mr Hillier sadly died of natural causes."
