Bury’s Town Mayor has shared his thoughts on how the Bury Free Press Community Awards are about recognising humble people, inspiring others, and also the categories he is most looking forward to seeing winners for this year.Peter Thompson, who was elected as Suffolk County Councillor for Eastgate and Moreton Hall on May 7, said the awards were a great chance to recognise those who would not usually make themselves known to public praise.“What we are trying to do with the Community Awards is to recognise people who, first of all are very much humble and don’t want to draw attention to themselves, and it’s to shine a spotlight on those people who wouldn’t otherwise get the recognition for their efforts,” he said.Cllr Peter Thompson has shared his thoughts on what he likes about the Bury St Edmunds Community Awards. Picture: Mark Bullimore.“That’s the crux of it for me.”The 2021 awards, held in association with Bury Town Council and with Treatt as the lead sponsor, are to be held at the historic Guildhall, in Bury, on September 16, when residents young and old will be in with a chance of being acknowledged for their efforts in making the community a better place in some way. This year’s categories are Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Best Event by a Community Group, Good Deed, Everybody Needs Good Neighbours, Eco-Friendly, Best Community Group and Lifetime Achievement.The Bury Free Press Community Awards 2019. .When asked if there were any he was particularly looking forward to this year, Cllr Thompson said the Young Citizen of the Year but also the Eco-Friendly category.“It’s very clear the public sentiment cares about the green agenda,” he said, following on from the Green Party gaining nine seats in this month's county council elections. He added: “Suffolk County Council was one of the first in the public sector to acknowledge the climate emergency and we live in a very green part of the country.”Cllr Thompson said, ultimately, what he liked about the awards though was the broad range of categories on offer whose winners were there to inspire the next generation.The Guildhall, Bury St Edmunds, where this year's awards will be held.You have until July 26 to cast your votes for this year’s awards.
