Breaking News ! "Very few British fighters have had the chance to become a genuine superstar of the ring but that’s the opportunity for Josh Taylor this Saturday night in Las Vegas. In only his 18th fight, Taylor can become the holder of all four world light-welterweight title belts with a victory over Jose Ramirez. Taylor brings the IBF and WBA belts and Ramirez the WBO and WBC to a bout that could be a contender for fight of the year.Taylor has already proved that he is one of the best fighters in the world but he could become the undisputed champion in one of the quickest times ever and he has done it the hard way. Already he has beaten guys like Victor Postol, Ivan Baranchyk and Regis Prograis — all men who many would have been avoiding. To put into perspective what he could achieve on Saturday night, the great Floyd Mayweather won his first world title in his 18th fight — and hadn’t beaten anywhere near the level of opposition that Taylor has.It has been an amazing rise for Taylor, who if he wins will then be in the frame for fights against big names like Terence Crawford and Errol Spence and will no doubt be in the top five pound for pound fighters in the world. When you are being mentioned in the same breath as those guys then you really have reached the very top of the sport.I have a strong belief that Taylor will get the win but I do have a couple of slight concerns and of course it would be totally illogical to think he will not have to go through some very tough moments in a unification fight with a proud Mexican like Ramirez. Taylor has this William Wallace, Braveheart, mad Scot, never-say-die spirit that has helped him become a world champion but that can also allow him to be dragged into a brawl. He has to be looking to outbox Ramirez because he has the skills to do it and I’m sure his coach Ben Davison will have been drilling that into him.I just hope, also, that the tough fights he has had so far do not in any way catch up with him when the going gets tough. Two out of his last three fights have been particularly tough. But, putting those aside, Taylor has the ability, the grit and fast hands to box his way to a points victory.A win would not only put him in the position of arguably the No.1 pound for pound British fighter but also gain him thousands of more fans around the world and particularly in the Hispanic community in the States which would raise his profile dramatically. The Mexicans are a bit like the Belfast fans because they really know their boxing and often get behind the guy who has beaten their hero. It’s not going to be easy but I expect Taylor to reach that superstar level with a gutsy win over Ramirez.I watched in awe at how Canelo Alvarez took apart Billy Joe Saunders to unify the WBC, WBA and WBO super-middleweight titles last weekend. The only defeat on Canelo’s record is to Floyd Mayweather in 2013. He’s a different man now and I would say a better fighter than Mayweather. If they both fought in their prime at light-middleweight, Canelo would win.I know that’s a big statement but, believe me, Canelo is the most complete fighter of this generation.
. Caleb Plant has the IBF belt and that should be the next fight for Canelo. I can’t see how Plant stops him becoming the undisputed super-middleweight champion. The movement, punch selection and accuracy shown by Canelo was incredible, and while Saunders was competitive, he was being broken down by the Mexican’s heavy shots. Canelo puts a fighter under so much pressure and intimidation that he makes opponents anxious and they are exhausted by it.The way he took Saunders apart in the eighth round was something to behold, and then when he went back to the corner he told his coach that Saunders would not be coming out because he had “broken his face”. Looking at the picture released this week of the damage around the cheek and eye of Saunders confirmed that. Saunders has needed gauze and screws to fix his face and I wouldn’t be surprised if he never fought again. It didn’t come as a surprise to me that Saunders took a lot of criticism for not coming out for the next round after suffering the damage to his eye which was closed. He had criticised heavyweight Daniel Dubois for taking a knee when he was struggling with an eye injury against Joe Joyce. The corner took the decision to pull Saunders out and that was the right thing to do. That’s what the Dubois corner should have done but he ended up making the decision himself. Nobody wants to see a fighter go blind and Saunders can thank his corner for being wise enough to see that he couldn’t risk further damage.Saunders has earned plenty of money and been a two-weight world champion, so if he has to leave the ring he can look back with pride at his achievements. On the other hand, Canelo has much more to achieve. I watched a documentary on him recently and you could see why he keeps improving because he is never out of the gym. We’re fortunate to be witnessing a special talent.Irvine is going for goldBrendan Irvine has been confirmed as a two-time Olympian, which is a fantastic achievement. The Belfast man went to Rio in 2016 and that experience will stand to him when he competes in Tokyo this summer. He has a great chance of bringing home a medal. Brendan is an out and out amateur. He has the size, skills and perfect dimensions that make him a real threat against anybody in the world."
