Breaking News ! While the focus has always been on places with the highest infection rates in the county there are few towns and villages in Cambridgeshire that should be recognised for their lower infection rates as well. And surprisingly, the place with the lowest Covid-19 infection rate in Cambridgeshire isn't a tiny village or a very rural area, which perhaps shows the effort its residents have been putting in to keep everyone safe. The Cambridge ward of Castle and Eddington in the north of the city is actually the place with the lowest infection rate in the county at the moment. The ward and new development are grouped together in Public Heath England (PHE) data, but even combined there are very few cases. What's even more impressive is that this was ten cases less than the seven days prior to that, meaning that the area has had a fall in new cases by 36 per cent. Its current rolling infection rate, as of January 12, is just 182.5 (cases per 100,000), which is nearly three times lower than Cambridge's average infection rate of 523.2, which has also seen a big decrease in the last week. The second-lowest in the county were the villages of Eye and Thorney close to Peterborough, which again are grouped together in PHE's data. The villages, and their surrounding area, had an infection rate of just 197.7, which is over two times lower than nearby Peterborough's average rate of 552.3. There were only 13 new cases reported in the seven days up to January 7, which was five less than the seven days before.

. Here there were just 14 cases in that same seven day period, two less than the seven days before. The villages also have a rolling infection rate of 201.1. Another ward of Cambridge, West Chesterton, was fourth lowest with a rolling infection rate of 214.9. It had just 17 new cases in the first week of January, which was two cases lower than the week before. And then finally a collection of tiny South Cambridgeshire villages (again grouped together in PHE data) were fifth lowest. The villages include Duxford, Whittlesford, Great and Little Abington, Pampisford, Thriplow and Brabham and their surrounding areas as well. Here there were just 19 new cases, which is six lower than there were in the seven days previously. The villages together have a rolling infection rate 236.8. You can explore PHE's data in the government's interactive Covid-19 infections map for yourself here.
