Breaking News ! The attraction of signing Jadon Sancho is obvious. A young, English winger who has the capacity to change a game in an instant and get the crowd on their feet, he's exactly the type of player Old Trafford would embrace. But the question for Manchester United has to be just how much they need Sancho compared to other areas of the squad that also require investment. The Sancho saga dominated last summer's transfer window and it might not be over yet. United might find it both easier and cheaper to do a deal this summer, although Borussia Dortmund's likely return to the Champions League, having flirted with a fifth or sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga, will embolden the German side. Sancho wants a move, however, and with another year ticked off his contract Dortmund will accept they can't demand the €120million fee they were so set on a year ago. There's been a feeling the 20-year-old hasn't been as good this season, but he's hitting form at the right time. His double in the DFB Pokal final against RB Leipzig on Thursday took him to 17 goals for the season and he's scored four against Leipzig in the space of a week. Signing Sancho would put him in competition with Mason Greenwood, who seems unlikely to move away from the right at the moment. Last month Solskjaer said he was still "a few years away" from becoming a centre forward. That deal might add impressive depth to the United ranks, but how much of a benefit it would be if other positions weren't strengthened is debatable. The absence of Harry Maguire last week again highlighted the need for another central defender of class.

. United can't run the risk of a Victor Lindelof-Eric Bailly axis next season if Maguire picks up an injury, when both are clearly better alongside the England centre back. Maguire's leadership skills were badly missed against Leicester City and Liverpool and those successive Old Trafford defeats should have heightened the need to recruit another top-level central defender. That might not be the only issue for United, however. Solskjaer has placed great faith in the midfield partnership of Fred and Scott McTominay but as United tried to play out from the back on Thursday, they were regularly under pressure from Liverpool's aggressive press. It was a test that Fred, in particular, failed to pass. The Brazilian regularly played his own side into trouble and his passing under pressure remains a weakness, one magnified by Solskjaer's understandable desire to have his side build from the back. With Nemanja Matic turning 33 before the start of next season there's an argument the time could be right to recruit a new defensive midfielder, someone like Declan Rice who has shone for West Ham this season. Rice has always been an excellent defensive midfielder but he's shown a more progressive side to his game this season, through his range of passing and his ability to drive forward from deep. He could suit United. Given the effect the pandemic is continuing to have on revenues, United will find it hard to fund a move for Sancho and two other first-team players. While Sancho is the signing that would be the most exciting, it isn't necessarily the deal that should be top of the to-do list.
