Breaking News ! Manchester United officials will be hoping Sunday's historic protests are the peak of the outrage against the Glazers' controversial ownership of their club, but the reality is they represented the resurgence of a battle which has being going on for the last 16 years. There is a misconception among some that the protest was solely fuelled by the scandalous European Super League proposal, but tensions have been simmering for well over a decade since the Green and Gold campaign faded away. The Super League fiasco was merely the tipping point. "If Utd were about to win the title would they have done what they’ve done would they f***," Liam Gallagher tweeted on Sunday evening, missing the point that the 2010 Green and Gold movement was sandwiched by title wins and Champions League final appearances in 2009 and 2011. This isn't a case of supporters simply throwing their toys out of the pram because the football isn't as good as it used to be. Figures presented by Swiss Ramble show exactly why United fans are so aggrieved; they are viewed as numbers on a spreadsheet rather than the core audience whose interests should be at the heart of every decision made by the club. The Glazers took control of United in June 2005 via a £550m leveraged buyout, inheriting a club which had a few million in the bank, but crucially was debt free. In that time the club has spent £704m on paying interest for loans taken out by the Glazers as well as £244m on loan repayments and £125m on dividends. That's a £1.1bn cost of financing their ownership of the club. While it is a fact that United's revenue has nearly tripled under the Glazer family, both Manchester City and Liverpool have actually grown by larger percentages in the same time period, while City have also largely matched United's commercial gains over the same 15-year period. United generated just under £5bn in revenue for the decade between 2010 and 2020, by far and away the highest in the Premier League and £1.1bn higher than City in second place. Despite having such a generous cash flow, the majority of it has been spent on paying off the aforementioned loans and interest payments, with the club having only spent £118m on infrastructure in the last 11 years.

Only Tottenham Hotspur (£831m) are in deeper debt than United in the Premier League - and the main reason behind that is their new stadium. With such a financial outlook, Swiss Ramble conclude 'it is clear the draining of the club’s resources will continue for the foreseeable future.' Perhaps now critics of the protest might be able to see why supporters are so angry. An ownership model which fans protested against at the time of the takeover is playing out exactly as they had predicted and no amount of PR spin can hide the debt. But, what can actually be done? Thousands of fans descended on Old Trafford (Image: AFP via Getty Images) The tragedy is that an elite club like United will always have thousands of people willing to pay to watch them, and the Glazers won't care who is filling their coffers. While loyal season ticket holders might reluctantly be forced into giving up their seats for the greater power of change, others will be waiting in the wings still more than happy to fund a regime which is riddling the club with debt. The success of the protests at the weekend signalled the potential for seismic change in modern football, but as Liam Gallagher crassly ignored, these feelings of discontent must continue no matter the results on the pitch nor who is paraded with club merchandise in the summer transfer window. If the majority of supporters really do want change they must amplify their voices once again and look to hit their American overlords where it hurts - in their pockets. So much discussion in football is needless tribalism, pitting factions against factions and pushing a dangerous siege mentality that fans have little in common. How wrong they are. Those outside Old Trafford and The Lowry on Sunday were there because of their shared love for the club they are proud to call their own. It's time for United fans to be united again.
