Breaking News ! It's no secret which transfer Manchester United fans are desperate to see completed this summer but Jadon Sancho lining up at Old Trafford next season is looking increasingly unlikely. Sancho, 20, remains top of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's shortlist but time is running out to complete a deal for the winger, with Borussia Dortmund adamant he will remain with the Bundesliga side next season. Last week, the MEN reported United have made progress in talks over agents fees and personal terms with Sancho as the club continue to push for a deal to bring the forward back to the Premier League. However, just days later, Dortmund coach Lucien Favre expressed his delight that Sancho would be staying. He said: "We need him, no question. Everyone was happy that he stayed. We don't need to talk long about its qualities – they are enormous. He scores and sets up a lot of goals and can often make all the difference." David Brooks and Douglas Costa have both been considered and Italian media outlets continue to credit the Reds with an interest in Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic. Perisic, 31, was a target for United in the past during Jose Mourinho's spell in charge of the club and is set to leave the Serie A side after spending last season on loan at Bayern Munich. While he may not fit the profile of player Solskjaer is looking to sign, United should seriously consider sending defender Chris Smalling in exchange for the Croatia international. Smalling also spent last season out on loan after slipping down the pecking order at Carrington, impressing during his spell with Roma in Italy. Roma were believed to be keen on making his stay permanent but have been unable to meet United's valuation of the 29-year-old thus far with Inter also believed to be keen on the former England international. . A swap deal would be a win-win situation for United. It's clear Solskjaer needs to trim his options in defence with Smalling likely to play no role in the team despite returning to Manchester. Offers will also be welcomed for Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo while Diogo Dalot faces an uncertain future too. With clubs around the world suffering the financial impact of the coronavirus crisis, many are choosing to be frugal with their transfer funds - perhaps explaining why Smalling has not been sold after such an impressive season in the Serie A. United's finances have also been hit as explained by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward who stressed that big-money transfers were simply not feasible this summer, hence the reluctance to meet Dortmund's £108m valuation of Sancho. By swapping Smalling for Perisic, they are strengthening a key position while trimming an overstocked area of their squad. The winger joined Bayern Munich last summer after they failed to sign Leroy Sane from Manchester City. Few expected Perisic to be anything but a stop-gap until a deal for Sane could be renegotiated but the 31-year-old became a key player for the German champions as they secured the Bundesliga title and Champions League trophy. It's a testament to his impact that Bayern attempted to negotiate a permanent deal even after a deal for Sane had been secured. Perisic described how painful it was seeing his dream move to Old Trafford collapse three years ago. He told The Athletic: "How close was I going there? Very close. It was an amazing thing for me when Jose called me. It was difficult to say no to him. In fact, I really, really wanted to join him and play for United. It was a dream of mine to play in all the big leagues. But it didn't happen. It was painful for me. But I don't want to go into the details. I only found out myself the real reasons two years later." United should make his dream a reality this summer.
