Breaking News ! Health chiefs have urged people with coronavirus symptoms to stay away from Greater Manchester’s GP surgeries and A&E departments. Only those who are seriously ill and need urgent medical attention should still seek help at an emergency department. A region’s Health and Social Care Partnership says visiting healthcare settings with symptoms risks spreading the virus to more vulnerable people and healthcare workers. The warning comes after reports that more than 100 people turned up to Royal Bolton Hospital A&E requesting coronavirus tests. A Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership spokesperson said: “We are imploring people with coronavirus symptoms to not visit emergency departments or GP practices to seek a test for the virus. “Doing so, risks spreading the virus to more vulnerable people and healthcare workers, while also adding to the pressure already being felt by our health services. “If someone does have coronavirus symptoms, they should isolate for ten days and book a test through NHS.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119. These are the only two ways of booking a test. Neither emergency departments or GPs are able to assist in booking tests and cannot provide coronavirus testing themselves. Coronavirus has affected us all and if the situation is going to improve, we all need to think about the impact our actions could have on those with the greatest need.” Ambulances outside Bolton A&E (Image: Manchester Evening News) On Tuesday evening (September 15), Royal Bolton Hospital issued a desperate plea for residents to stop visiting its emergency department in an attempt to get tested. Bolton is currently the ‘coronavirus capital’ of the country - with infection rates recently soaring to more than 200 cases per 100,000 people. Meanwhile, Rochdale council chief executive Steve Rumbelow described a 'noticeable change' in people’s behaviour against a backdrop of soaring infection rates and a testing system in 'meltdown'. “We have seen, across Greater Manchester, a significant change in that we have not seen people turning up at A&E for some time, and they are turning up now, and it’s largely because they are not able to get tested,” he said. “It’s not massive numbers, I don’t want to over-egg it, but it’s obviously a significant change in terms of behaviour and indicates that people are starting to get concerned.” He added: “Test and trace is pretty much in meltdown at the moment and it is one of the key tools for managing the virus. "It’s a major concern, and the way tests are being rationed is just not sustainable for containing the virus effectively going forward.”
