Breaking News ! More than 1,500 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours for the first time in the UK. Today's number of daily reported deaths hit 1,564, which takes the total number of deaths involving Covid-19 to more than 100,000. It is the highest number of UK deaths reported on a single day since the outbreak began, after the previous highest daily toll of 1,325 was recorded on Friday. Dr Yvonne Doyle, medical director at Public Health England, said there had now been more deaths in the second wave than in the first - but did not provide any definition of either time period. Commenting on today's figures she said: “With each passing day, more and more people are tragically losing their lives to this terrible virus, and today we have reported the highest number of deaths on a single day since the pandemic began.” According to the Department of Health, the UK death toll now stands at 84,767. That is the number of people who have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19. However, additional figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the number of deaths where coronavirus has been mentioned on the death certificate is much higher. The total number of people who had Covid-19 recorded on their death certificate, plus deaths known to have occurred more recently, is now 101,160, according to the PA news agency. Hospitals are coming under increasing pressure
The latest figures come as Boris Johnson warned that hospital intensive care units (ICUs) face being overwhelmed unless coronavirus rates are brought under control. The prime minister said there was a “very substantial” risk that ICUs would be unable to cope if numbers kept increasing. He told MPs: “If you ask me when do we think that the ICU capacity is likely to be overtopped, I can’t give you a prediction for that. “But all I can say is that the risk is very substantial and we have to keep the pressure off the NHS and the only way to do that is to follow the current lockdown.” The latest official figures on the coronavirus dashboard show more than 36,000 people are in hospital with coronavirus, including almost 3,500 on ventilation.
