Breaking News ! The number of coronavirus cases more than doubled over one week in some neighbourhoods within the borough of Wigan, according to the latest figures. The infection rate rose by more than 100 pc in parts of Ashton-in-Makerfield, Atherton and Leigh in the seven days up to January 6, the data reveals. Standish North and South also saw a rise of 109.5 pc and 112.5 pc respectively. But in Leigh West, where the lowest infection rate was recorded during this period, the number of Covid cases fell by 40 pc with only 13 confirmed cases. He said: "We need to make sure that we abide by what's being asked of us. That is washing your hands, maintaining your distances and don't go out unless you need to go out. "I think it's important now more than ever, specifically with the new strain of Covid which seems to start to have an impact on the North West. "I want to make sure that we do our best to protect people and we start to emphasise even more the message of asking people to do what's required of them. I think it's important. "What we don't want to see is the NHS swamped and not being able to cope, and I think it's up to us all to do our bit and we will be pushing that message out very strongly in the coming days." There were 1,505 Covid cases confirmed in the borough of Wigan in the seven days up to January 6, an increase of 46.

During this period, the overall infection rate in the borough was 457.9 per 100,000, according to the latest government data available online. In Hindley Green, there were 29 new cases during that period – 18 more than the previous seven-day period which is a week-on-week increase of 163.6 pc. In Ashton-in-Makerfield East there were 56 new cases confirmed, 124 pc more than the previous week when 25 coronavirus cases were confirmed. Winstanley had 53 new Covid cases confirmed during that period, up 120.8 pc. In Leigh North, there were 26 new cases confirmed – 14 more than the previous seven-day period, which is a week-on-week of increase of 116.7pc.
Atherton South East and Tyldesley West had 43 new cases confirmed, up 186.7 pc from the previous week when 28 fewer cases were confirmed. Standish North had the highest infection rate during this period with 733.9 cases per 100,000, an increase of 109.5 pc compared to the previous week. There were 44 cases confirmed in this neighbourhood – 10 more than in Standish South where the infection rate rose by 112.5 pc over the week.
