You've got no idea how much faith I have in Tim Paine,' Langer told reporters on Wednesday.'He has been outstanding as the Australian captain in everything he does.'He had a frustrating day. We've got to cut him some slack, surely.'(He's an) outstanding leader and will continue to be for some time to come yet... He has my 100 per cent support.'Langer was known for being one of the fieriest and most combative cricketers in Australia's greatest team, led by Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting in the 1990s and 2000s, and he insisted that verbal intimidation - something synonymous with those sides - is integral to Test cricket.

. Langer added on his team's behaviour: 'People do get under each other's skin don't they? That's what great Test cricket is all about.'  Ashwin vs Australia ¿¿— Madan Gowri (@madan3) January 11, 2021 Paine had a barbed exchange with Ashwin that was picked up by the stump microphone Paine (left) clashed with Indian batsman Ravi Ashwin (right) during ill-tempered third TestSmith has been under scrutiny after video footage from the stump camera in Sydney showed him dragging his boot across the batting crease as Australia tried to bowl India out on day five.Former players accused him of trying to erase Rishabh Pant's guard but Smith said he was just marking centre as he would normally do if he was batting.Langer refuted any suggestion Smith was seeking an advantage.'I literally cannot believe some of the rubbish I read about Steve Smith. Absolute load of rubbish,' he said.'That wicket was that flat and it was like concrete, you'd need 15 inch spikes to make an indent on the crease. He added: 'Anyone who suggests for one millisecond he was trying to do something untoward, they are way out of line.'If anyone knows Steve Smith, he's a bit quirky and we've all laughed about it for the past couple of years.'Give me a break.'
