Breaking News ! Chris Wilder getting carried away with predicting league positions and where Sheffield United can finish next season is not something that interests him right now. A ninth-placed finish this season just gone had exceeded all expectations for a club entering the division with the lowest wage bill. Indeed, the fact that United were competing for a European place with just two games to go was a fabulous achievement for a side widely tipped for an immediate return to the Championship. But as good as that achievement was, the Blades boss still wants more. His saying 'to stand still is to go backwards', goes some way to explaining United's improvement season after season under the 52-year-old since his arrival back in May 2016. He expects United to compete again in the world's toughest division and Chris Basham revealed yesterday that he has already 'demanded more' from his players when they return for pre-season in the coming weeks. But progress to United will not be improving on their ninth-placed finish, which to those people in the game outside of S2 might suggest. Wilder wants to make sure the club firmly has its feet under the Premier League table before league positions can be taken into account as a measure of progress. "The season does not become any easier because it's our second season in," he said prior to yesterday's Player of the Year Awards. "The challenges are going to be the same, if not tougher to show the consistency that we have done. "You don't get extra points for finishing ninth last season. It's a clean slate. "There are some quality teams who have been promoted, there are going to be teams who improve and we have to make sure that we improve and don't stand still in every aspect of the game. "Establishing ourselves in the Premier League is key. "I have talked long and hard about Burnley having four or five years in the division is a fabulous achievement. Season after season they keep improving, the mentality is the same, which is key for me and one that I have hammered home and will continue to hammer home. "Players, football clubs and managers do become comfortable and that's when everybody suffers and gets hurt. We have a fan base that is realistic as well, they understand the game.

." Understandably, going from League One to a top ten Premier League finish inside four years means there are certain aspects of the club's infrastructure that is behind where it needs to be for a Premier League team. The off-field issues regarding the takeover finally being settled mean it can now look to address this side of the club. The early signs are positive. And that, Wilder says, has to be taken into account when measuring expectations. "Off the pitch there is a lot of work that needs to be done to catch up with the football team and I have said to the board. I think they totally understand that. "The team in terms of the last two or three years have accelerated at an incredible pace, so understanding what's gone on off the pitch as well from a legal point of view with Prince Abdullah taking over the whole football club. "That had to be sorted out. "But now, as long as there are improvements off the pitch, which I am sure there will be, the signs are good. The work ethic is there from everybody, we are not sat back. We are not a comfortable football club and I am not a comfortable manager. "The players have to go and achieve. Sheffield United transfer news Free agent defender linked Dean Henderson loan latest The race to be United's number one John Swift to United update "We have not had any major injuries this year and we have to make sure we do our best to prevent those. "Some times, like with Couttsy, that gets taken out of your hands as well and you are dealt blows that you have to recover from. "But as long as we give our maximum right the way through, we have the bounce of the ball and we keep our team healthy and the attitude is right and correct, which is driven by me, and we recruit in a sensible way in the summer and improve the group then we have to have a positive mindset going into the new season."
