Breaking News ! Secondary school pupils will be required to have three tests a week when they return to the classroom. The Government has stated that the return to face-to-face education has been the national priority, meaning they wanted to focus on making sure they could return pupils as quickly and safely as possible. Boris Johnson announced the roadmap from lockdown yesterday (Monday, February 22) and made it clear that education is first on the list. With schools reopening in step one of the roadmap out of lockdown, here is exactly how the new mass testing programme will work. How will the students be tested? Many schools already have testing facilities in place. The students will be given lateral flow tests meaning they will be able to get results quickly and are set to have three a week. The government has said that all secondary school and college students will take the three Covid-19 tests as they return to the classroom from March 8. Schools and colleges will have discretion on how to test students over that week to enable their return to the classroom so it is important to check with your child's school so you can get receive precise instructions. All primary school children will also return on March 8, with primary school staff continuing to take two rapid Covid-19 tests each week at home. Secondary school and college staff will also be provided with two tests to use each week at home.

. However, it is not yet known when the first step will end and the switch to home testing will begin. Like every part of the roadmap set out yesterday by the Government, the dates will be confirmed in accordance with data, and as long as the UK continues to hit its milestones of vaccinating the public and keeping hospital admissions low, it is hoped that the roadmap will proceed as planned, with most restrictions lifted on June 21. Schools are finally returning (Image: PA) What else can students do to keep safe? The return to school for all pupils was prioritised due to the impact closures have on the education, health and wellbeing of children and young people. In order to keep safe, staff and students in secondary schools and colleges are advised to wear face coverings in all areas, including classrooms, where social distancing cannot be maintained and as a temporary extra measure. Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said: "I know this is a moment that students and parents up and down the country have been waiting for, and I would like to take this opportunity to give my thanks to all education and childcare staff and parents who have worked so hard to make sure students have continued to receive a high-quality education throughout this lockdown. Enter your postcode for the latest Covid-19 data for your area "The testing of staff and students ahead of their return to secondary schools and colleges, alongside strengthened safety measures, should reassure families and education staff that extra measures are in place alongside the existing bubble system, enhanced hygiene and Covid-secure precautions. "We are all well aware that being back in school or college brings huge benefits to young people’s education, development and wellbeing. "The classroom is the very best place for education and the return of face-to-face teaching for all pupils will be a welcome move for pupils and parents across the country."
