Breaking News ! Morrisons is set to become the first UK supermarket to remove all plastic carrier bags. The move will include replacing all bags for life to a paper alternative too and will begin in Scotland as soon as this month. The Bradford supermarket giant has over 500 stores worldwide, and completed a successful trial in eight of its stores last year. The company has made significant moves recently to become more eco friendly including encouraging customers to bring their own containers for the deli counters. The reusable paper bags will cost 30p each and are recyclable, water and tear resistant. The chain promises that the bags can hold up to 16kg - the equivalent of 13 bottle of wine.

Morrisons' chief executive, David Potts, said: "We have been listening hard to our customers over the past year and we know that they are passionate about doing their bit to keep plastics out of the environment. "Removing all of the plastic bags from our supermarkets is a significant milestone in our sustainability programme." Waitrose is also planning to follow suit with their own trial to remove the bags for life later this year.
