Breaking News ! A Holmfirth man is looking to secure his place in the 'ultra marathon club' by running 100 miles in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA). Joe Brereton, 32, will take on the mammoth challenge on September 11 when he intends to run five laps of a 20 mile loop around the Holme Valley in just under 30 hours. It will mark the second time Joe has tackled an ultra marathon after he completed 60 miles as a "personal challenge" last year. But this time around, Joe, a butcher at J Brindon Addy Butchers and Food Hall in Holmfirth, is doing it all in the name of charity and is asking for donations to MNDA. The charity has been in the spotlight in recent months after Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow was struck down by the disease. Former club captain Kevin Sinfield wowed the nation before Christmas running seven marathons in seven days to raise more than £2.5m for MNDA. Writing on his JustGiving page, Joe said he had chosen the charity "after witnessing the distress and upset MND causes for families affected". He went on: "I feel grateful to be able to live an active, normal life. I want to put this privilege to good use by raising funds to fuel research towards a better quality of life for people affected". Speaking to Yorkshire Live, Joe explained his reasons for taking on the huge distance. He said: "Running has become a full-time hobby. I have got into ultra running and last year I did my first 60 miler. "I didn't do any fundraising for that, and the event I was going to do was cancelled due to Covid, so I did my own from my doorstep as a personal challenge. "I then arrived at the conclusion that I wanted to do 100 miles.

. "I have plotted out a 20 mile loop around the Holme Valley from my doorstep. I'll do that five times in one 'sitting' and that will probably take me just over a day." To date, a total of £80 has been raised, but Joe insisted he does not have a specific goal in mind. Asked if he was apprehensive about taking on the challenge, Joe said: "You need to go into it with a degree of confidence. I think you need to know that you're going to do it or the moment that things start to go bad you will just back down. "I know there will be some really dark points. I think for me, the mental training is quite important. It's learning how to deal with things when they go wrong because it will not be pleasant. "I'm really concentrating on the mental side of the training. It's getting out for runs when you really don't want to. "But I am apprehensive. Running through the night is going to be a challenge."
