Breaking News ! A builder who armed himself with a sawn-off shotgun and fired it at a man’s leg during a bitter row over unpaid wages has been jailed for more than 12 years. Carl Phillips’s victim feared for his life as blood squirted from his leg after he and his boss had been lured down a secluded road in Sheffield last summer. Sheffield Crown Court heard the 28-year-old became involved in a dispute over wages of £2,500 owed to another builder who had paid their boss a visit on the morning of July 31. Five men, including 33-year-old Benjamin Jones, surrounded him and intimidated him as he left a building site and demanded the money. In a state of panic and shock, the building boss was advised by his accountant to just pay the £2,500. The pair, along with three others, were given directions to a pub, a house and then a reservoir in Sheffield where they believed they would just hand over the cash. Instead, the accountant was shot in the leg before blacking out and being taken to hospital. Prosecutor Ian West said he had suffered a fractured fibula and had to have fragments of lead removed from the wound. Phillips had also fired the shotgun a second time at the front of the car but nobody else was injured. Judge David Dixon described Phillips’s actions as “wicked, disgraceful violence” before sending him to prison for more than 12 years.

The complainant agreed with his fellow complainant to in effect pay the money outstanding. For reasons that are not clear, it was thought they should deliver it. “The clear intention throughout was to cause injury and pain and show you weren’t to be messed with.” Phillips, of Wesley Avenue, Aston, Sheffield, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm and was jailed for 12 years and nine months. Members of his family sobbed and stood up as he was taken to the cells. There was a further outburst from the public gallery when Jones, who had admitted affray, was handed a suspended prison sentence for his role. His nine-month term was suspended for 18 months but he must carry out 180 hours of unpaid work. Jones, of Skelton Lane, Woodhouse, Sheffield, must also complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days as a result of what Judge Dixon described as “idiotic behaviour”.
