Breaking News ! Tottenham Hotspur look set for an exciting end to the transfer window, amid growing reports that Jose Mourinho will complete a double swoop for Real Madrid pair Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon. Spurs have been linked with an audacious move to bring Bale back to North London with Real Madrid rumoured to be willing to subsidise his wages as part of a loan move to the Premier League. Manchester United are also potentially tracking Reguilon, but Spurs are reportedly now ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in the race to sign the Spanish international. The return of Bale would be a major boost for Spurs ahead of the 2020/21 season getting into full flight, and the arrival of Reguilon could signal a change in approach from Mourinho as part of a full-back partnership with summer signing Matt Doherty. GK: Hugo Lloris The French international remains first choice for Mourinho between the sticks after recovering from a serious elbow injury midway through last season. Paulo Gazzaniga has been linked with a move away after impressing as a replacement for Hugo Lloris in 2019/20, and he could leave if he is offered a first team role elsewhere, with Joe Hart stepping up as Lloris’ permanent deputy. RB: Matt Doherty Doherty’s £14.7million arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers has been viewed as a shrewd move by Mourinho, with the Republic of Ireland international offering versatility and experience to the Spurs squad. However, the big challenge for both Mourinho and Doherty is to maintain the impressive form he showed under Nuno Espirito Santo in a new position at Tottenham. With the correct midfield structure in front of him, Doherty can flourish, however his adaptability to a more defensive role will come under scrutiny this season. CB: Toby Alderweireld Convincing Toby Alderweireld to sign a new long-term contract was an early priority for Mourinho after arriving at the club in November 2019. With the Belgian international now tied to the club until 2023, he should be able to focus on regaining his best form at the heart of the Spurs defence. His organisational ability will be essential in managing the attacking instincts of Doherty and Reguilon, and his experience should help Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg settle as the designated holding player in front of the defence. With Alderweireld taking on the task as the leader at the back, Dier is free to concentrate on honing his skills in a deeper position. The 26-year old will also play a key role in helping Hojbjerg to settle, having previously filled the No.6 position under Mourinho. LB: Sergio Reguilon Reguilon impressed on loan at Europa League winners Sevilla last season, and with Ferland Mendy and Marcelo blocking his path at the Santiago Bernabeu, he looks almost certain to move on. However, despite not playing as a wing-back at Sevilla, he is a full-back in a similar mould to Doherty, with his best work done higher up the pitch. The defensive aspect of his game is still a work in progress, but his recovery pace means he can be relied upon to track runners from midfield. CM: Tanguy Ndombele Question marks over French international Tanguy Ndombele have persisted this summer after a low-key debut season in the Premier League. Despite reports Mourinho wanted to offload him ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, he now looks set to be given another chance by the Portuguese boss.

. If Hojbjerg can ease the defensive load on him in 2020/21, his ability to transition between midfield and attack will be vital in allowing Spurs to impose themselves in games to greater effect. Tanguy Ndombele will be aiming to show Jose Mourinho what he is really capable of this season. (Image: Tottenham Hotspur FC/Tottenham Hotspur FC via Getty Images) CM: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg Hojbjerg’s arrival from Southampton was not greeted with the fanfare of a high profile signing, and that is exactly how the Danish international will have wanted it. The former Bayern Munich man impressed with the Saints in the last two seasons after nailing down the holding role in their midfield under Ralph Hasenhuttl. With two attacking full-backs and a potential midfield partnership with Ndombele and Dele Alli, the onus is on Hojbjerg to remain positionally disciplined as the fulcrum of the trio. CM: Dele Alli Alli has been tentatively linked as potential makeweight in the deal to bring Bale back to the club, however, Mourinho is unlikely to be willing to lose the England star. His form dipped last season, with fatigue and an unclear role in the early days of Mourinho, leaving the 24-year old frustrated. RM: Gareth Bale Bale’s time at Spurs between 2007 and 2013 was characterised by a transition from an inexperienced full-back into a rampaging and lethal left-winger. Despite being sidelined in the last 12 months in Madrid, when called upon by Zinedine Zidane, his role switched flanks to the right, with a focus on creativity rather than raw speed. Bale still possesses the pace to outrun defenders, but an Arjen Robben-esque brief to cut in from the right and create chances would also open up space for Doherty to overlap into. ST: Harry Kane Kane’s position in the Spurs starting line-up is obviously undisputed, but the prospect of linking up with Bale could unlock another level for the England skipper. With Bale and Son Heung-Min either side of him, defences will be stretched in between full-backs and centre-backs, creating vital space for Kane. With defenders teaming up to nullify Kane, space to run into has become a rarity for him in the last 12 months, but a new scope to exploit gaps in behind will be vital. LM: Son Heung-min The potential arrival of Bale will not impact fans' favourite Son Heung-min’s role in the team, such is the importance of the South Korean to Mourinho’s system. In a similar way to the Welshman, Son will look to move inside and link up with Kane, as well as posing a threat on the counter attack. His ability to drift out to the touchline will also create space for Reguilon to get forward and let Alli find gaps in behind the opposition midfield.
