Breaking News ! Unemployment in the North East started to rise as the latest national lockdown took effect, new figures show. The region’s unemployment rate for the three months up to the end of 2020 stood at 6.5%, the second highest rate in the UK. The number of people claiming unemployment benefits stood at 116,815, up more than 40,000 from this time last year. That’s why throughout the crisis, my focus has been on doing everything we can to protect jobs and livelihoods. “At the Budget next week I will set out the next stage of our Plan for Jobs, and the support we’ll provide through the remainder of the pandemic and our recovery.”
