Breaking News ! Two teenagers who allegedly fled from police onto the Metro tracks were arrested after an uninsured car was flagged up at the Tyne Tunnel. This week, specialist motor patrol officers and the force’s police dogs have been deployed around the North East in greater numbers than ever before all in a bid to clean up the region’s roads. A road safety week, ‘One Road, One Week’, started on Monday and sees traffic police across the UK and Europe taking part in a week long operation to crack down on dangerous driving in all its forms from speeding and mobile phone use to uninsured drivers, intoxicated driving and seatbelt offences. During checks at the Tyne Tunnel on Tuesday at 2.40pm, the driver of an uninsured black Ford Fiesta saloon failed to stop when signalled to. The driver instead put his foot on the accelerator, sparking a pursuit through Wallsend. The driver eventually dumped the car near Wallsend Metro and was spotted, along with his passenger, jumping a fence and fleeing along the Metro tracks. But it wasn’t long before officers managed to catch up with them and arrest them. . Sergeant Ian Hankin, who is leading Northumbria Police’s One Road, One Week campaign, said: “This campaign is the largest and most diverse roads traffic policing operation we have seen in recent years and emphasises our commitment to making our roads a safe place for everyone. “One of the areas we vowed to pay extra attention to was of course the Tyne Tunnel. Our officers did an excellent job in detaining two teenagers who were so determined to evade us; they even jumped a fence in an attempt to flee along Metro tracks. “Despite their gymnastic efforts, it wasn’t long before our officers caught up the fleeing duo. “But they weren’t lonely in custody for in the first two days of the operation (Monday and Tuesday) we arrested a further four people.” He added: “This operation is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the multitude of factors that can cause accident on our roads, from drink driving to not carrying out proper vehicle checks before long journeys. “So our engagement van will be deployed across the region so we can speak to members of the public and we would call on people to engage with us if we are in your community.” One Road, One Week continues this week. If you would like to report any concerns regarding motoring offences report it online at the Northumbria Police website on at the ‘Tell Us Something’ page.
