Breaking News ! Parts of the country which were hardest hit during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic have seen infection rates rocket, figures reveal. Across England 225 (71%) of 315 local authority areas have seen a rise in case rates, 89 (28%) have seen a fall and one is unchanged, in the figures for the seven days to January 8, the Mirror reports. There is a return to more misery in the North West, where places such as Liverpool and Knowsley, which were major Covid hotspots in the first wave, see their week-on-week case rates more than double in today's Public Health England figures. In Tuesday's update of the latest Covid-19 case rates for every local authority area in England, the rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people. Six authorities in the Liverpool City Region are in the top 10 local areas with the biggest surges in coronavirus rates. No North East council is in the 10 worst affected but the region's highest infection rate is in Sunderland, where there are 490.4 cases per 100,000 up from 480.4. According to Knowsley Council, current rates of Covid-19 in the borough stand at 1,348 per 100,000 population and are continuing to rise - one of the highest rates in the whole of the UK. This is up slightly from 1,565.0 in the seven days to January 1. Newham, also in London, has the second highest rate, up from 1,366.1 to 1,468.3, with 5,185 new cases. Today's figures, for the seven days to January 8, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government's testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two). The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people. Data for the most recent four days (January 9-12) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases. The list has been calculated based on Public Health England data published on January 12 on the Government's coronavirus dashboard. Do we need a tougher lockdown?
