Breaking News ! The chief executive of Tesco has updated customers on safety measures in place at its stores in light of the escalating Covid cases. Jason Tarry, chief executive officer of Tesco UK, says the company continues to focus on ensuring all shoppers can get their essentials in a safe environment as he outlined the Covid 19-security measures in place that follow Government guidance. In a message to shoppers he said: "Now that strict national lockdown measures are in place again, we wanted to share an update on some of the ways we’re supporting you to shop safely." Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, England's deputy chief medical officer, has warned that we face months of uncertainty as we await the impact of vaccinations. He said: "The vaccine effects are going to take three months until we see them properly, and until then no one can relax. "We are probably in the last few furlongs of this race - like in the Grand National. We just have a couple more fences, we have just got to stick with it." The update comes as a range of stores including Tesco, Asda, Sainbury's and Morrisons are toughening up on face mask requirements with some saying that anyone not complying - and who are not exempt from wearing a mask - will be banned. John Lewis also announced it is suspending its click & collect service in response to the Government's concerns over the current situation. Here are the rules to follow in Tesco Face masks Mr Tarry says it is a legal requirement to wear a face covering in Tesco stores to protect both customers and staff. Anyone not wearing one will not be allowed into the store unless they are exempt in line with Government guidance. He added: "Please also make sure that you wear your face covering correctly – covering your mouth and your nose." ." Entry rules Tesco stores have a 'one-in one-out' system in operation to limit the number of shoppers in its stores at any one time and to ensure social distancing. A traffic light entry system is in place at more than 1,300 branches. This monitors numbers and shoppers should wait for the green light to appear as this will indicate when it is safe to enter. If the red lights up that means the store limit has been reached and shoppers should queue outside the shop. Hand sanitiser also will be available around the shop. Online deliveries Those shopping online are told that deliveries will be made by staff maintaining a safe distance. They also will regularly sanitise their hands and equipment. But customers who are able to do so are asked to shop in-store to help free up online slots for those who need them most. Mr Tarry said: "We recognise that these measures are difficult for everyone". He added that staff are "working very hard in difficult circumstances to make sure everyone can get what they need" and asked shoppers "so please be kind, patient and respectful".
