The players returned to pre-season training on Wednesday after four months away from the Academy of Light, but they are having to follow the EFL's Return To Training protocols which detail the procedure clubs must implement to minimise the risks in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. The Academy of Light building has remained closed, with no access to the gym, changing rooms or other communal areas, and the players have been arriving at the training ground in their training kit. The guidelines recommend a minimum of five days training at step one, before players are given Covid-19 tests ahead of a move to step two.
. And it is at step two that the Academy of Light could be reopened, and players will be able to use the gym, changing rooms, and canteen. The EFL protocols suggest that full contact training begins in small groups of two or three players, moving on to larger groups of between four and 12 players, and ultimately to full team training.

Sunderland are planning a number of pre-season friendly games, but these will take place behind-closed-doors and most likely either at the Academy of Light or at their opponents' training ground. The League One campaign is due to begin on Saturday, September 12, although there are plans to play the first round of the EFL Cup on the weekend of September 5, and an EFL Trophy game in the midweek leading up to the first game of the league season.
