Breaking News ! Sunderland AFC has pledged its support to a campaign donating laptops to disadvantaged children across the North East who are being forced to learn from home during lockdown. All schools in England are closed until at least February half-term as part of the latest nationwide lockdown - except for vulnerable youngsters and the children of critical workers. Gavin Williamson later confirmed those pupils without a device would be allowed to return to the classroom, but many schools are struggling to meet the demand for spaces. With data suggesting there are at least 55,000 families in the region without access to a laptop, tablet or desktop computer, there are increasing fears that pupils within those households could fall behind with their education. In partnership with Northumbrian Water, the Northern Powerhouse Partnership and Sunderland-based IT firms Rebuyer and Code, ChronicleLive launched Laptops for Kids - a campaign aiming to ensure all children can participate in online learning. The initiative, which saw more than 200 devices donated within the first 24 hours, has been backed by headteachers, MPs, the National Education Union and local businesses. Now, the Black Cats have pledged their support to the campaign and even urged players and staff to contribute any spare or unwanted devices to the cause. SAFC’s chief executive officer, Jim Rodwell, said: "Throughout the pandemic, we have seen the local community come together to support those that need it most. "Learning from home brings challenges to children and parents – many of whom are also working remotely – alike, so we are incredibly proud to be supporting this key initiative within the region. "Our supporters have rallied behind some incredible causes within the past 12 months, and I’m sure this will be no different." The campaign is calling on individuals as well as businesses and organisations throughout the region to support our children in challenging times. . "It is a challenging time for many families in Sunderland, so this vital initiative to get devices to children in our community that need them is incredibly important. "I would encourage everyone to have a search through their cupboards, and donate any unused or old devices to Laptops for Kids so that children can access their online education." Simon Howatson, chief executive officer of Rebuyer and Code, added that Sunderland fans could play a vital role in ending the digital divide among pupils across the North East. He said: "It’s fantastic to have the support of the club for this vital campaign. "Sunderland fans can make a real difference for local kids by donating laptops, tablets and PCs, which we’ll then securely wipe and upgrade. "No child should fall behind in their learning because they can’t access online learning, and we want to help as many families as possible to bridge the digital divide."
