Breaking News ! Stan Flaherty’s reputation seems to grow with each game he plays. At 18, he is already establishing himself as one of Newcastle United’s most talented young players, a gifted attacking midfielder with an excellent touch and an eye for goal. He was on the scoresheet on Monday night as Newcastle Under-23s beat Fulham 2-1 at St James’ Park, curling a superb shot past the goalkeeper to put his side in front late in the second half. The teenager created Newcastle’s first goal, too, setting up Yannick Toure after an excellent run and cross. This was the latest of a string of impressive performances from Flaherty, who joined the club from Arsenal in January. He had spent time at Newcastle in December, doing enough to impress and earn a move north after Christmas. “He’s got good pedigree in terms of the time he’s spent with Arsenal and people we’ve spoken to there have given him really good commendations, so we’re excited about the prospect of getting him in the squad,” said academy manager Joe Joyce when the transfer was confirmed. When you come up here and you see the likes of Sean and Matty [Longstaff] in the first-team, that is a big plus because you think maybe one day that could be you.” The hope is that one day it will be Flaherty breaking into the first team, emerging as a fan favourite at St James’ Park. That is a little while off yet, but the early signs are promising. Flaherty was considered a talent by the London club, although didn’t make the cut despite his exceptional technical ability.

. He made 14 appearances for the club’s Under-18s but struggled to earn regular starts. Competition for places is high at Arsenal, of course, and it’s often difficult to stand out at the Premier League’s biggest clubs. Given more of a chance at Newcastle, Flaherty looks set to thrive. His confidence will have grown after Monday’s performance, which added to an already encouraging start. Stay up to date with Newcastle United with our Black & White Bulletin! His natural ability is clear to anyone who’s seen him play, though there have been concerns that he might be lacking some physicality. Flaherty is certainly not an imposing midfielder, but he will have time to bulk up and grow accustomed to professional football over the next few years. The general consensus at Newcastle is that Flaherty’s future is bright. He is a nascent talent, just nine months into his career with the Magpies, but already there is excitement surrounding the young midfielder. Flaherty won’t be getting carried away, though. His focus will be on the next game, away at West Bromwich Albion, where he’ll hope to add to his growing tally of goals and assists for the season.
