Breaking News ! When you're down, your luck seems to desert you - and that certainly appeared to be the case for Newcastle at Old Trafford on Sunday. While many would argue Steve Bruce's side are only getting what they deserve in the Premier League this season, most fans felt the Magpies could - and should - have had a penalty in the early stages of the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United. Jamaal Lascelles appeared to be bundled over in the box by England defender Harry Maguire in the first half, but referee Paul Tierney was unmoved. To rub salt into the wounds, he then awarded the hosts a second-half spot-kick for a foul by Joe Willock on Marcus Rashford, despite seemingly minimal contact. But if Newcastle fans were feeling aggrieved then at least they have an ally in former top-flight referee Mark Halsey, who felt the Magpies should have had their penalty at Old Trafford. Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow (left) and Jamaal Lascelles appeal to referee Paul Tierney (Image: PA) “There was minimal contact (on Rashford) but if that’s a penalty, then Newcastle’s, where Harry Maguire takes out Jamaal Lascelles, is 100% a penalty, no shadow of a doubt," Halsey told The Transfer Tavern. "You know, if he’s giving that to Man United, then he’s got to give that one to Newcastle for consistency.

. So if you’re giving that as a penalty (to Man United), which I’m not complaining about as there was a slight contact and he’s gone down, well, there was more contact on Lascelles from Maguire at the other end after four minutes, that should have penalised. "The Newcastle penalty is far more of a penalty than the Man United one. One was given and one wasn’t but in my opinion, both should have been given." That came when Karl Darlow saved from Bruno Fernandes in Manchester United's 4-1 victory at St James' Park earlier this season. Leicester City (10) have been awarded the most penalties so far this season, with West Ham and Burnley both only receiving one.
